Fixes to Try

1 Check Spotlight Keyboard Shortcut

The shortcut may have been changed or disabled:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Keyboard โ†’ Keyboard Shortcuts
  2. Click Spotlight in the left panel
  3. Make sure "Show Spotlight search" is enabled
  4. The shortcut should be Command + Space
  5. If it's set to something else, click it and press Command + Space to reset

2 Rebuild the Spotlight Index

This is the most common fix โ€” forces Spotlight to re-index everything:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Siri & Spotlight โ†’ Spotlight Privacy
  2. Click the + button and add your main drive (usually "Macintosh HD")
  3. Click Done
  4. Wait a few seconds, then go back to Privacy
  5. Select the drive you just added and click โˆ’ to remove it
  6. Click Done
  7. Spotlight will now rebuild its index โ€” this can take 15-60 minutes
Patience required: During re-indexing, Spotlight results will be incomplete. Let your Mac sit for an hour before testing again.

3 Re-index via Terminal (Faster)

Force a complete re-index using command line:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Run: sudo mdutil -E /
  3. Enter your password
  4. This erases and rebuilds the entire index
  5. Also run: sudo mdutil -a -i on to make sure indexing is enabled

4 Check What Spotlight Is Allowed to Search

Some categories may be disabled:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Siri & Spotlight
  2. Scroll down to Search Results
  3. Make sure the categories you need are checked (Applications, Documents, etc.)

5 Restart the Spotlight Service

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Run: sudo killall mds
  3. Spotlight's indexing daemon will restart automatically
  4. Wait a minute, then test Spotlight

6 Restart Your Mac

Sometimes the mds process just needs a clean restart:

  1. Go to Apple menu โ†’ Restart
  2. After restart, wait a few minutes before testing Spotlight

7 Check Available Disk Space

Spotlight can't index if the drive is nearly full:

  1. Go to Apple menu โ†’ About This Mac โ†’ Storage
  2. Make sure you have at least 10-15GB free
  3. If low, free up space and then re-index

8 Update macOS

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. Restart and test Spotlight

Still Not Working?

If Spotlight still doesn't work after re-indexing, there may be a deeper macOS corruption issue that requires professional diagnosis or a reinstall.
