Fixes to Try

1 Check Volume and Mute Settings

Start with the obvious:

  1. Press the volume up key (F12 or the speaker icon key)
  2. Check the menu bar โ€” is the speaker icon showing a mute symbol?
  3. Open System Settings โ†’ Sound
  4. Make sure the output volume slider isn't at zero
  5. Uncheck "Mute" if it's checked

2 Check Output Device Selection

Mac may be sending audio to the wrong device:

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ Sound โ†’ Output
  2. Make sure "MacBook Speakers" or "Built-in Speakers" is selected
  3. If you see "HDMI" or "Headphones" selected but nothing is connected, switch to built-in speakers
Common cause: Plugging in headphones and removing them can leave Mac stuck on "Headphones" output with nothing actually connected.

3 Plug In and Remove Headphones

This resets the audio jack detection:

  1. Plug in a pair of headphones
  2. Play some audio
  3. Unplug the headphones
  4. Mac should switch back to built-in speakers automatically

4 Reset Core Audio

Restart the audio system without rebooting:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Type: sudo killall coreaudiod and press Enter
  3. Enter your password if prompted
  4. Core Audio will restart automatically in a few seconds
  5. Test your speakers

5 Check App-Specific Volume

Some apps have their own volume controls:

  • Check the volume slider within the app (YouTube, Spotify, etc.)
  • On macOS Ventura and later, check System Settings โ†’ Sound โ†’ Applications for per-app volume
  • Make sure the specific app isn't muted

6 Restart Your Mac

A full restart clears audio driver issues:

  1. Go to Apple menu โ†’ Restart
  2. Let it fully restart
  3. Test audio immediately after login

7 Reset NVRAM (Intel Macs)

NVRAM stores audio settings that can become corrupted:

  1. Shut down completely
  2. Turn on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds until you hear the startup chime twice
  4. Release and let Mac boot normally

8 Update macOS

  1. Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Software Update
  2. Install any available updates
  3. Restart and test audio

9 Delete Audio Preference Files

Corrupted audio prefs can cause persistent issues:

  1. Open Finder, press Command + Shift + G
  2. Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences
  3. Delete: com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
  4. Also delete: com.apple.audio.SystemSounds.plist
  5. Restart your Mac
