๐ Step 1: Diagnose the Issue
- No charging indicator at all: Cable, adapter, or port issue
- Charges very slowly (1% per hour): Under-powered adapter โ iPad Pro M2 needs at least 30W to charge at a reasonable rate; 5W phone chargers will barely keep up with screen-on use
- "Not Charging" in status bar while plugged in: Adapter wattage too low โ iPad is running but not actually gaining charge
- Charges on one USB-C port but not another: Port failure โ the M2 iPad Pro has one USB-C port (right side)
- Charges with some cables but not others: Cable capability mismatch โ USB-C cables vary widely in charging capability
โก Step 2: Use the Right Charger โ Critical for iPad Pro M2
This is the most commonly missed issue with iPad Pro charging. Not all USB-C chargers are equal:
- Minimum for visible charging: 18W USB-C PD
- Recommended: 30W USB-C PD or higher
- Apple's fast charge spec: 96W USB-C โ charges the iPad Pro from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes
- Phone charger (5-12W): Shows "Not Charging" when screen is on, charges extremely slowly when screen is off
If you're using a charger that came with a laptop or another iPad, check the wattage. The adapter that came with older iPhones (5W) is completely inadequate for an iPad Pro.
๐ Step 3: Test the USB-C Cable
USB-C cables have hidden capabilities โ a cable that works for data transfer or charging a phone may not support the power delivery needed for iPad Pro:
- Try the cable that came with your iPad Pro โ Apple's included cable is rated for full PD charging
- Try a known-good USB-C cable from another device
- Look for USB-C PD (Power Delivery) labeling on third-party cables โ passive USB-C cables without PD support will charge slowly
- Inspect the cable for kinks or damage near the connector โ USB-C cables break internally at the connector end
๐งน Step 4: Clean the USB-C Port
- Power off the iPad Pro
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick โ never metal
- Shine a light into the USB-C port and look for lint or debris
- Very gently scrape out any compacted lint from the bottom of the port
- Follow with a short burst of compressed air
iPad Pro M2 users who carry their iPad in a bag frequently experience lint compaction in the USB-C port. A thorough cleaning often restores full charging capability.
โ๏ธ Step 5: Optimized Battery Charging
iPad Pro M2 has Optimized Battery Charging โ it learns your routine and intentionally holds charging at 80% to reduce battery wear:
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health โ Optimized Battery Charging
- Toggle off temporarily if you need to reach 100% right now
- Or long-press the setting to temporarily disable for one charge cycle
๐ Step 6: Force Restart
For iPad Pro M2 (Face ID models โ no Home button):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up
- Quickly press and release Volume Down
- Press and hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears
- Plug in charger after boot and check charging status
๐ฒ Step 7: Update iPadOS
Settings โ General โ Software Update. Power delivery bugs on USB-C iPads are patched in iPadOS updates โ especially behavior with third-party chargers and cables.
๐ Battery Health
iPad Pro M2 launched October 2022 โ at 3+ years old, some units may have battery wear:
- Settings โ Battery โ Battery Health (available in iPadOS 17+)
- Check Maximum Capacity โ below 80% warrants a battery replacement consultation
