Apple Pencil not pairing, not drawing, laggy, won't charge, or missing from Bluetooth settings? Covers Apple Pencil 1st gen, 2nd gen, USB-C Pencil, and Apple Pencil Pro on all compatible iPad models.

⚑ Check Compatibility First

Not all Pencils work with all iPads. Apple Pencil 1st gen: iPad (6th gen+), iPad mini (5th gen+), iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad Pro 9.7"/10.5"/12.9" (1st/2nd gen). Apple Pencil 2nd gen: iPad Pro 11" (1st–4th gen), iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd–6th gen), iPad Air (4th/5th gen), iPad mini (6th gen). Apple Pencil Pro: iPad Pro M4, iPad Air M2. USB-C Pencil: iPad (10th gen), iPad mini (6th gen), iPad Air (M1+). Using the wrong Pencil for your iPad will never work.

Pairing & Connection Fixes

1Re-pair the Apple Pencil

Settings β†’ Bluetooth β†’ find Apple Pencil β†’ tap (i) β†’ Forget This Device. Then re-pair: for 2nd gen/Pencil Pro, attach it magnetically to the iPad's side β€” pairing happens automatically. For 1st gen, remove the cap and plug into the iPad's Lightning port for 15 seconds to pair. For USB-C Pencil, connect via USB-C cable. If the Pencil doesn't appear in Bluetooth after pairing, make sure Bluetooth is ON and restart both the iPad and the Pencil (1st gen: unplug and replug, others: detach and reattach).

2Charge the Pencil

Apple Pencil 1st gen battery depletes quickly when not in use β€” if it's been sitting unused for weeks, it may be fully dead. Charge for at least 15 minutes before testing: plug into Lightning port (1st gen) or attach magnetically (2nd gen/Pro). A dead Pencil often feels like a pairing failure because it won't respond or appear in Bluetooth at all. Check battery level in Settings β†’ Bluetooth β†’ Apple Pencil, or in the Today View battery widget.

3Restart the iPad

Hold Top + Volume β†’ slide to power off β†’ wait 30 seconds β†’ restart. This re-initializes the Apple Pencil communication stack (which runs separately from regular Bluetooth). After restarting, re-attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector or plug in briefly to re-establish the pairing. A fresh connection after restart resolves the majority of "Pencil stopped working suddenly" reports.

4Check the app supports Apple Pencil

Not every app supports Apple Pencil. In apps that don't support it, Pencil input is treated as a finger touch β€” it draws but with no pressure sensitivity, tilt, or palm rejection. To verify hardware is working, open Notes app β†’ tap the draw button β†’ test with the Pencil. Notes fully supports Apple Pencil on all compatible iPads. If it works in Notes but not another app, that app has limited or no Pencil support.

Drawing Performance Issues

5Check the Pencil tip

Apple Pencil tips wear down with use and can cause reduced sensitivity, scratching sounds, or inconsistent line quality. Inspect the tip: it should be smooth with no visible flat spots or cracks. Replacement tips are inexpensive and take 30 seconds to swap β€” twist counterclockwise to remove, screw the new one clockwise. Apple sells a 4-pack of Pencil tips, and third-party alternatives work well. A worn tip causes 50% of "Pencil feels wrong" reports.

6Clean the magnetic connector area (2nd gen / Pro)

The magnetic charging and data connector on the iPad's side can accumulate debris, oils, and thin films that block electrical contact. Use a dry microfiber cloth to clean the strip on both the iPad and the Pencil. Even a thin layer of screen protector edge or a case lip covering part of the magnetic strip will prevent charging and intermittent communication. Make sure your iPad case has a full cutout for the Pencil connector area.

⚠️ Screen protector interference: Thick tempered glass screen protectors (especially those over 0.3mm) add a gap between the Pencil tip and the actual display glass. This increases parallax (the drawn line appears offset from the tip), reduces pressure sensitivity accuracy, and can cause hover detection failures on Apple Pencil Pro. Use a paper-feel matte protector designed for Pencil use, or remove the protector and test.

Advanced Fixes

7Disable and re-enable Apple Pencil

Settings β†’ Apple Pencil (appears when Pencil is connected) β†’ toggle any Pencil features off and back on. Also try: Settings β†’ Accessibility β†’ Touch β†’ Apple Pencil β€” check that "Only Draw with Apple Pencil" isn't causing unexpected behavior. In iPadOS 17+, there's also a "Pencil & Scribble" section in Settings with additional toggles that can affect Pencil behavior.

8Update iPadOS

Settings β†’ General β†’ Software Update. Apple Pencil firmware and driver updates ship with iPadOS updates. If your Pencil stopped working after a recent iPadOS update, check for a newer update β€” Apple usually patches Pencil regressions quickly. iPadOS 17.4 included Apple Pencil Pro hover detection fixes.

9Reset All Settings

Settings β†’ General β†’ Transfer or Reset iPad β†’ Reset β†’ Reset All Settings. This resets Bluetooth pairing data, Pencil configuration, and Accessibility settings without deleting your apps or files. After resetting, re-pair the Pencil fresh β€” attach magnetically (2nd gen/Pro) or plug in briefly (1st gen) β€” and test in Notes before reinstalling any third-party drawing apps.

10Test on another iPad

If you have access to another compatible iPad, test your Pencil on it. If it works there, the issue is your iPad's digitizer, software, or the magnetic connector. If the Pencil doesn't work on any iPad, the Pencil itself is faulty β€” likely a dead battery, broken tip contact, or failed internal components. Apple Pencils have a 1-year warranty; if yours is within warranty, Apple replaces them free of charge for hardware defects.

βœ… 2nd gen Pencil battery drain when not attached: Apple Pencil 2nd gen drains its battery slowly even when not in use. If you don't draw for a week, it may be significantly depleted. Always store it attached to the iPad's magnetic connector when not in use β€” this keeps it charged and prevents unexpected "dead Pencil" situations. The magnetic attachment also protects the Pencil from rolling off surfaces.
