Black screen, won't wake up, stuck on Apple logo, or completely unresponsive? These fixes work for Apple Watch Series 6 through Series 10, Ultra 2, and SE. Start with the simplest โ most cases are just a dead battery or a software freeze.
Charge the watch for at least 30 minutes on the original Apple magnetic charger, then force restart: press and hold both the Digital Crown AND the Side button together for 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. This resolves about 80% of "won't turn on" reports.
Apple Watch with a completely drained battery shows a black screen with a red lightning bolt icon โ but only briefly, then goes dark again. You may not even see the charging indicator if the battery is critically low. Place it on the charger and wait a full 30 minutes before attempting anything. The watch needs minimum charge to show any response.
Try a different Apple Watch magnetic charger or cable. Third-party chargers can fail silently โ the watch sits on the pad but isn't actually charging. The official sign the watch IS charging: a green lightning bolt appears on screen briefly when you place it on the charger. No lightning bolt = no charge. Also check that the back of the watch (the magnetic charging area) is clean and dry.
Connect the charger to a wall adapter (5W minimum, 12W for Series 7 and later fast charging). Charging from a laptop USB port provides lower wattage and can be too slow to bring a deeply drained battery back. A wall outlet with a 12W or 20W USB-A/C adapter is best.
Press and hold both the Digital Crown (the rotating knob) AND the Side button (the rectangular button) simultaneously for 10 full seconds. Don't release early. The screen will flash the Apple logo โ release both buttons immediately when you see it. The watch will restart and boot normally within 30-60 seconds. You can do this while the watch is on the charger.
If your Apple Watch got stuck on the Apple logo during a watchOS update, keep it on the charger and near your iPhone. The update may still be completing in the background โ wait up to 60 minutes. If it's still stuck after an hour, force restart (Step 4) while keeping it on the charger. The watch will resume the update attempt after restarting if needed.
Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone โ tap your watch at the top โ tap the (i) icon โ Unpair Apple Watch. This triggers a factory reset of the watch and creates a backup on your iPhone. After unpairing, set it up again as new or restore from the backup. Resolves persistent software issues that survive force restarts.
If the watch turns on but behaves erratically: Watch app on iPhone โ General โ Software Update. Keep the watch on the charger and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone during the update. watchOS bugs that cause persistent freezes and boot loops are typically fixed in software updates.
The back of the Apple Watch has four small charging contacts (the circular area with the magnetic charger). Sweat, sunscreen, and dust can coat these contacts and prevent charging. Clean them gently with a dry lint-free cloth. Also clean the corresponding contacts on the charger puck itself โ tarnish buildup on the puck pins is a common culprit on older chargers.
Apple Watch Series 4 and earlier are 5-7+ years old โ their batteries have genuinely worn out. If the watch won't hold charge for more than 30-60 minutes or won't power on at all even after a long charge, the battery cells are dead. Battery replacement for older Series costs $69-99 at Apple or $50-80 at third-party shops. On watches this old, compare repair cost to a refurbished Series 6 ($150-200) before committing.
If charging and force restart don't work, it may be a battery or hardware issue. PC Medics of NJ diagnoses and repairs Apple Watch power issues on all models.
