FaceTime quality depends on network, hardware, and software. When it's bad, the cause is usually one of three things: network bandwidth, device CPU load, or iOS bug. This guide narrows it down fast.
Understanding Normal vs. Abnormal Temperatures
First
The FaceTime runs warmer than older Intel Macs — here's what's normal:
- Idle: FaceTime should connect at full HD with no audio dropouts — case may feel slightly warm
- Light use: Brief pixelation during bandwidth shifts = normal — web browsing, email, documents
- Heavy load: Group FaceTime with 5+ people may show lower quality = bandwidth-aware — video export, 3D, compiling, gaming
- Concerning: Pixelation throughout, audio drops every 30 seconds, OR calls fail to connect at all

Step 1: Check Placement and Airflow

- Background app downloads: if iCloud Photos is uploading, or App Store is updating, bandwidth gets eaten. Check Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
- Multiple devices on FaceTime in same household: sharing WiFi between 2 simultaneous FaceTime calls degrades both. Stagger calls.
- Cellular FaceTime: 5G works fine. 4G LTE often okay. 3G/EDGE = FaceTime won't work well.
- SharePlay watching together: uses bandwidth for video sync + FaceTime. May need to disable SharePlay for clear FaceTime audio.
When It's a Hardware Problem

If your FaceTime consistently overheats despite all of the above:
- An internal fan may be failing — listen for grinding or silence
- Thermal paste between chip and heatsink can dry out (rare on new Macs, common on 3+ year old units)
- Run Apple Diagnostics: Shut down, then hold Power button on boot, select Options, press Cmd+D
- Contact Apple Support if under warranty — fan replacement is usually covered
