Apple Watch Ultra 2 Water Damage Recovery
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is rated WR100 (water-resistant to 100 meters) and is EN13319 certified for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. Despite this, water damage can still occur — from saltwater corrosion, exposure beyond rated depth, hot water (saunas, hot tubs), soapy water, or a compromised seal from a previous impact. This guide covers what to do if your Ultra 2 shows signs of water damage.

Section 1: Recognizing Water Damage Symptoms
Water damage does not always show up immediately. Watch for these signs in the hours and days after exposure:
- Muffled or distorted speaker: Water trapped in the speaker port causes muted audio or a "gargling" sound during calls or Siri responses.
- Microphone not working: Siri does not hear you, voice memos sound distorted, or phone calls have no audio on the other end.
- Foggy display: Moisture condensation visible under the sapphire crystal, especially in temperature changes.
- Touch screen issues: Ghost touches, unresponsive areas, or erratic swipe behavior caused by moisture on the digitizer.
- Charging problems: The watch does not charge, charges intermittently, or shows a temperature warning when placed on the charger.
- Sensor malfunctions: Heart rate sensor gives wildly inaccurate readings, SpO2 fails, or depth gauge reads incorrectly.
- Random restarts or crashes: Water on the logic board can cause short circuits that trigger reboots.
- Green/red tint on display: OLED damage from water intrusion can cause permanent color distortion.
Section 2: Immediate Steps After Water Exposure
If you suspect water has entered your Apple Watch Ultra 2, act quickly:
- Remove it from water immediately. Do not press any buttons while submerged if you can avoid it — button presses can force water past the seals.
- Rinse with fresh water (if saltwater/chlorine): This may seem counterintuitive, but if the watch was in saltwater, pool water, or soapy water, gently rinse it under clean lukewarm tap water. Salt and chemicals cause far more corrosion than fresh water.
- Eject water from the speaker: The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a built-in Water Lock feature. Open Control Center (press the side button), tap the water drop icon to enable Water Lock if it is not already on, then turn the Digital Crown to eject water. You will hear a series of tones and feel vibrations as the speaker pushes water out.
- Dry the exterior: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth to thoroughly dry the entire watch, paying special attention to the speaker grilles, microphone port, Digital Crown, Action Button, and the sensor area on the back.
- Do NOT use a hair dryer or heat: Excessive heat can damage the OLED display, battery, and adhesive seals. Let the watch air dry at room temperature.
- Do NOT put it in rice: This is a myth. Rice does not effectively absorb moisture from sealed electronics, and rice dust can clog the speaker and microphone ports.
Section 3: Drying Out the Watch Properly
If water has entered the case, you need to remove moisture before corrosion sets in (which can start within 24-48 hours):
- Silica gel method (best): Place the watch in a sealed container or zip-lock bag with 5-10 silica gel desiccant packets. These are far more effective than rice. Leave it sealed for 48-72 hours.
- Gentle airflow: Position the watch near (not on) a fan blowing room-temperature air. Point the airflow toward the speaker and mic ports. Leave it for 24-48 hours.
- Do not charge it yet: Do not place the watch on its charger until it has dried for at least 48 hours. Charging a wet device can cause short circuits and permanent logic board damage.
- Rotate the Digital Crown frequently: Turn the Digital Crown back and forth periodically during the drying period. This helps prevent mineral deposits from drying and seizing the mechanism.
- Check for improvement: After 48-72 hours of drying, try wearing the watch. If the speaker is still muffled, repeat the Water Lock eject procedure several times. Minor moisture issues often resolve with time and repeated water ejection.
Section 4: Troubleshooting Persistent Issues
If symptoms persist after thorough drying:
- Speaker still muffled: Play audio (Music app or a timer alarm) and repeat the Water Lock eject process 5-10 times. Some users report success by placing the watch speaker-side down on a vibrating surface (like a running washing machine) to shake loose trapped water.
- Charging issues: Clean the back sensor/charging area with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) on a lint-free cloth. Check the magnetic charging cable for debris. Try a different Apple Watch charging cable.
- Sensor inaccuracy: Clean the back crystal with a damp cloth and ensure the watch fits snugly on your wrist. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Reset Fitness Calibration Data if heart rate readings remain erratic.
- Digital Crown stuck or gritty: Hold the watch under running lukewarm water while continuously rotating the Digital Crown for 30 seconds. Apple officially recommends this procedure.
- Ghost touches or touch issues: Restart the watch (press and hold side button > Power Off). If ghost touches continue, the digitizer may have permanent moisture damage requiring display replacement.
- Force restart: If the watch is completely unresponsive, press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Section 5: When Water Resistance Fails — Common Causes
Understanding why a WR100 watch let water in helps prevent future issues:
- Previous impact damage: Even minor drops can create invisible micro-fractures in the adhesive seal between the sapphire crystal and titanium case. The watch looks fine but the seal is compromised.
- Hot water/steam: Water resistance ratings are tested with cold fresh water. Hot water (hot tubs, saunas, hot showers) causes the titanium and adhesive to expand at different rates, temporarily opening microscopic gaps. Never wear the watch in a sauna or hot tub.
- Soaps and chemicals: Shampoo, soap, sunscreen, and cleaning products can degrade the rubber gaskets and adhesive seals over time. Rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure to chemicals.
- Age and wear: Water resistance degrades over time. The gaskets and adhesive that seal the watch dry out, shrink, and lose elasticity. A 2-3 year old watch may not maintain its original WR100 rating.
- Button wear: The Action Button, side button, and Digital Crown all have their own seals. Frequent use, debris, and sand can wear these seals down.
- Depth/pressure exceeded: The WR100 rating means static pressure equivalent to 100 meters. Dynamic activities like diving from a height, high-speed water sports, or water jet impact create pressures that exceed the rating momentarily.
Section 6: Professional Repair and Replacement Options
- Apple warranty: Apple's standard warranty and AppleCare+ do not cover water damage, even on the Ultra 2. Check your coverage at checkcoverage.apple.com.
- Apple out-of-warranty service: Apple may offer a flat-rate repair or replacement. For the Ultra 2, out-of-warranty service typically costs $399-499 depending on the damage. Contact Apple Support or visit a Genius Bar.
- Third-party repair: Experienced repair shops can open the watch, clean the logic board with an ultrasonic cleaner and board-level isopropyl alcohol treatment, and replace damaged components. This is often $150-250 and can save a water-damaged watch that Apple would simply replace.
- Ultrasonic cleaning: Professional repair shops use ultrasonic cleaners with specialized solutions to remove corrosion and mineral deposits from the logic board. This is the single most effective treatment for water-damaged electronics and cannot be done at home.
- Prevention going forward: After repair, apply a protective case for extreme water activities, and rinse the watch with fresh water after every ocean or pool session.
