The Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023) features a large 564mAh battery and titanium construction built for extreme conditions. If your Ultra 2 won't turn on or shows a black screen, follow these steps to diagnose and fix the issue.
Step 1: Force Restart Your Watch
Step 1
A force restart can fix a frozen or unresponsive watch:
- Press and hold both the Side Button AND Digital Crown simultaneously
- Continue holding for at least 10 seconds
- Release when you see the Apple logo
- Wait 1-2 minutes for the watch to fully boot
Unlike iPhone, you hold BOTH buttons — not just one.
Step 2: Check If It's Actually Off vs. Screen Issue
Step 2
The watch might be on but the screen is off:
- Try tapping the screen firmly
- Raise your wrist (Raise to Wake)
- Press the Digital Crown or Side Button
- Cover the screen with your palm, then lift — this should wake it
- In a dark room, look for any faint glow on the screen
Tip: If the watch vibrates or makes sounds but shows nothing, the display may have failed — this is a hardware issue requiring repair.
Step 3: Charge with the Correct Cable
Step 3
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 requires the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger (USB-C) for optimal charging:
- Use the L-shaped USB-C cable that came with the Ultra 2
- The older small circular puck charger will work but charges slowly
- Connect to a power adapter providing at least 20W
- Look for the green charging indicator — if you see red lightning bolt, battery is critically low
Charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to turn on.
Step 4: Clean the Charging Contacts
Step 4
Salt, sweat, and debris can block charging on the Ultra 2:
- Rinse the back of the watch under fresh water (it's water resistant to 100m)
- Clean the circular charging area on the watch back with a soft cloth
- Also clean the charging puck surface
- Look for any white salt residue around the sensors
The Ultra 2 is designed for ocean and outdoor use — it can handle a water rinse.
Step 5: Try a Different Power Source
Step 5
Rule out power source issues:
- Try a different USB-C port or wall adapter
- Use at least a 20W adapter (the Ultra 2 supports fast charging)
- Avoid USB hubs or low-power ports
- Try plugging directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip
Step 6: Check for Water Lock
Step 6
If the watch was recently in water, Water Lock might be active:
- Press and hold the Digital Crown to unlock
- The watch will play sounds to eject water from the speaker
- If the Action Button was used to enable Water Lock during a water activity, unlock it the same way
Step 7: Charge for Extended Time
Step 7
A completely dead battery may take time to show signs of life:
- Leave on charger for at least 2 hours
- The watch may show a red lightning bolt icon — this means it's charging but too low to turn on
- If nothing appears after 2 hours, try force restart while on charger
Note: If the Ultra 2 sat completely dead for weeks or months, the battery may need extended charging to recover. Leave it overnight.
Step 8: Check for Temperature Issues
Step 8
The Ultra 2 operates between -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F):
- If the watch is too cold, warm it up gradually before charging
- If it was in direct sun or a hot car, let it cool to room temperature
- The watch won't charge or turn on if outside its operating temperature
The titanium case conducts temperature quickly — give it 10-15 minutes to normalize.
Step 9: Try Recovery Mode
Step 9
If the watch is stuck in a boot loop or on the Apple logo:
- Place the watch on its charger
- Press and hold the Side Button until you see the Power Off slider
- Press and hold the Digital Crown
- Tap Reset when prompted
This performs a soft reset without erasing data.
Step 10: Contact Apple Support
Final Step
If nothing works, the watch may have a hardware failure:
- The Apple Watch Ultra 2 battery is not user-replaceable
- Apple battery service: $99 (if battery health is below 80%)
- Out-of-warranty repair: Varies depending on issue
- Check warranty: checkcoverage.apple.com
For an expensive device like the Ultra 2, Apple repair or AppleCare+ is recommended over third-party service.
