60% of muffled speakers are just clogged grilles.
No sound from your Apple Watch speaker ruins alerts, Siri responses, and calls. Most speaker issues are software-based or caused by blocked speaker grilles. Let's restore audio without hardware replacement.
Water Lock is designed to lock the screen and mute audio during swimming. If accidentally enabled, your speaker won't play sounds.
Check status: Swipe up from the bottom to open Control Center. If you see a lock icon with water droplets, Water Lock is active. Tap it to disable.
What does it do: When enabled, Water Lock mutes audio and prevents unintended touch input while you're in water. It's useful for swimming but can be turned on accidentally.
Your watch has separate volume controls for calls, alerts, and Siri. Each can be turned down independently.
On your watch: Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → check that volume for Calls, Alerts, and Siri are turned up (drag the slider to the right).
On your iPhone Watch app: Open the Watch app → Sounds & Haptics and verify volumes are adequate.
The Workout app has its own volume control separate from system audio. If you workout frequently, this might have been turned down.
On your watch: Open Workout app during a workout → Digital Crown to access controls → check volume. Or in Settings → Sounds & Haptics, scroll down to Workout Audio and verify it's turned up.
Sweat, lint, and dust clog the speaker mesh, muffling or blocking sound completely.
Process: Power off your watch. Use a soft, dry brush (old toothbrush) or compressed air to gently clean the speaker mesh on the side of your watch (below the Digital Crown). Hold the watch upright and use short bursts of compressed air. Avoid excessive pressure—you don't want to push debris deeper.
Software glitches can mute audio even when settings appear correct.
Force restart: Press and hold the Side button (power button) until the shutdown slider appears. Drag to power off. Wait 10 seconds. Press the Side button again until the Apple logo appears (about 15 seconds). Release and let it boot.
Sometimes audio settings get corrupted. Resetting them can help.
On your watch, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → scroll to the bottom and look for Reset option (availability varies by watchOS version). If available, tap it to reset audio to defaults.
Audio driver bugs are fixed in watchOS updates.
On your iPhone Watch app: Go to General → Software Update. If an update is available, install it (your watch must be charged to at least 50% and near your iPhone).
A fresh Bluetooth pairing sometimes resolves audio issues caused by corrupted wireless data.
Backup first, then on iPhone Watch app: General → Reset → Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings. After erasure, set up your watch again and restore from backup. Audio settings refresh during the re-pairing process.
If all software fixes fail and you hear no sound at all, the speaker driver might be damaged. Signs of hardware failure:
