Apple Watch Series 8 Not Turning On

Apple Watch Series 8 (September 2022) introduced Crash Detection — the same feature as the iPhone 14. It also features a temperature sensor, improved Always-On display, and up to 18 hours of battery life. At 3+ years old, here's how to revive it when it won't turn on.

ā±ļø 5-25 minutes šŸ’Ŗ Easy šŸ’° Free

šŸ” Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • Completely black, no response to button presses: Dead battery or software crash
  • Shows charging animation when placed on charger: Battery was fully drained — let it charge
  • Red lightning bolt icon: Critically low battery — needs more charging time before booting
  • Screen flashes then goes black: Software crash or display issue
  • Stuck on Apple logo: watchOS corruption — force restart or recovery needed
  • Vibrates but no display: Watch is on, Always-On Display may be disabled or screen issue
  • Goes dark after a drop: Display connector or cracked screen (Series 8 has Ion-X glass on aluminum models)

šŸ”‹ Step 2: Charge the Series 8

Series 8 uses the standard magnetic Apple Watch charger. Note that Series 8 does NOT support the fast-charge L-shaped cable (that's only for Ultra/Ultra 2):

  1. Place the watch on its magnetic charging puck — ensure the back of the watch makes full contact with the center of the puck
  2. Connect the charger to a 5W or higher USB adapter — any standard USB charger works
  3. Wait 2–3 minutes — a fully depleted Series 8 battery takes a moment before showing any indicator
  4. You should see a green lightning bolt or charging animation on screen
  5. If nothing after 5 minutes: inspect the charging contacts on the watch back — clean with a dry cloth. Also clean the charger puck surface
  6. Try a different charger puck, cable, and outlet

šŸ”„ Step 3: Force Restart Series 8

  1. Press and hold both the Side button (below the Digital Crown) and the Digital Crown simultaneously
  2. Hold for at least 10 seconds
  3. Continue holding even if the screen stays dark
  4. Release when you see the Apple logo
  5. Let the watch boot fully — can take 60–90 seconds

Important: Do not force restart during an active watchOS update — wait at least 30 minutes if an update was in progress before attempting a force restart.

šŸš— Step 4: Crash Detection Check

Series 8 introduced Crash Detection — same as iPhone 14. A hard drop while wearing the watch can trigger it:

  • If the watch went dark after a drop, it may have triggered Crash Detection and automatically attempted to call emergency services
  • The watch can appear unresponsive during the Crash Detection countdown — press the Digital Crown or Side button to dismiss the emergency call screen
  • After dismissing, try a force restart if the screen stays dark
  • You can adjust sensitivity: iPhone Watch app → Emergency SOS → Crash Detection

šŸŒ”ļø Step 5: Temperature Factors

  • Series 8 operates in 0°C–35°C (32°F–95°F). Outside this range, it automatically shuts down
  • After skiing, winter running, or a hot workout, bring to room temperature before trying to power on
  • At 3+ years with active daily use, battery capacity has likely dropped to 85–90%. This rarely prevents startup but can cause unexpected shutdowns during intensive workouts

šŸ’§ Step 6: Water Exposure

Series 8 is rated WR50 (50m water resistant) and IP6X dust resistant:

  • After swimming, run the Water Lock eject: swipe up on watch face → tap water droplet → spin Digital Crown to eject water
  • After ocean or pool swimming, rinse with fresh water and let dry before charging
  • If the speaker sounds muffled after water exposure, run the Water Lock sequence — water in the speaker is common and the eject vibration clears it
  • If the watch won't turn on after water exposure: let it dry fully (speaker-down on dry cloth, 1–2 hours) before charging or attempting restart

šŸ”§ Step 7: watchOS Recovery

For a stuck-on-Apple-logo or persistent crash:

  1. Make sure your iPhone has the Watch app and the Series 8 is still paired
  2. Open Watch app → General → Reset → Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings
  3. Alternatively, on your iPhone go to Settings → General → Reset → Reset All Settings (won't erase watch, but resets pairing state)
  4. If the watch is completely unresponsive with some battery remaining, force restart (Digital Crown + Side button Ɨ 10 seconds) up to 3 times

āœ… Quick Fix Checklist

  • ☐ Charging contacts on watch back cleaned
  • ☐ Charger puck surface cleaned
  • ☐ Different charger, cable, and outlet tried
  • ☐ Charged 5+ minutes — green lightning bolt visible
  • ☐ Force restart: Digital Crown + Side button, 10 seconds
  • ☐ Crash Detection dismissed if triggered by drop
  • ☐ Watch brought to room temperature
  • ☐ Water Lock ejected if recently used in water

šŸ”§ Still Won't Turn On?

If your Series 8 shows zero response to charging and force restart, the battery may have failed or there's internal hardware damage. Apple's out-of-warranty battery replacement for Series 8 is $79. Book a Genius Bar appointment for a free diagnostic first.
