Apple Watch Series 7 Battery Draining Fast
Apple Watch Series 7 (October 2021) was the first Apple Watch with Always-On Display at 60Hz — a huge display upgrade that also introduced new battery management challenges. At 4+ years old, battery wear is now a significant factor too. Here's every fix.
📊 Expected Series 7 Battery Life
- AOD on, standard use: 12-16 hours
- AOD off, standard use: 16-20 hours
- Workout tracking (GPS + heart rate): 7-10 hours
- After 4 years of wear: Subtract 15-25% for battery degradation
Series 7 launched October 2021 — at 4+ years, many batteries are approaching or below 80% capacity. Software fixes help, but battery replacement may be the real answer.
💡 Step 1: Always-On Display — The Biggest Drain
Series 7 was the first Apple Watch with AOD — it keeps the display glowing at all times at 60Hz. This is the single largest controllable battery drain:
- On watch: Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On → Off
- Or via iPhone: Watch app → Display & Brightness → Always On → Off
Turning off AOD typically recovers 3-5 hours of daily runtime. If your Series 7 barely makes 12 hours, expect 16+ without AOD.
Tip: If you want to keep AOD, reduce the display brightness: Settings → Display & Brightness → Brightness — lower brightness reduces AOD power draw significantly.
❤️ Step 2: Heart Rate and Blood Oxygen Sensors
Series 7 includes both heart rate and Blood Oxygen (SpO2) sensors — both can run in the background continuously:
- Blood Oxygen background measurements: Watch app → Blood Oxygen → disable background measurements. The SpO2 sensor is one of the highest-power sensors on the watch
- Heart Rate: Watch app → Privacy → Heart Rate → consider limiting to "During Workouts"
- Irregular Rhythm Notifications: Watch app → Heart → Irregular Rhythm Notifications — disabling stops continuous background ECG monitoring if you don't need it
📱 Step 3: Notifications and Complications
- Watch app → Notifications — go through every app and disable wrist notifications for apps you don't urgently need on your wrist. Each notification wakes the haptic engine and display
- Reduce complications: Switch to a simpler watch face with fewer complications — each complication polls its app for data continuously
- Watch app → General → Background App Refresh → Off
📡 Step 4: Cellular (If Applicable)
Series 7 cellular models drain LTE battery heavily when the watch is away from iPhone:
- If you always carry your iPhone, disable cellular on the watch: Settings → Cellular → turn off
- The watch automatically switches to LTE when away from iPhone — if you never need standalone connectivity, this is a significant save
- Check cellular usage: Watch app → Cellular — if a high amount of data is being consumed, a background app may be using LTE unnecessarily
🔄 Step 5: watchOS Update and Restart
Update watchOS: Watch app → My Watch → General → Software Update. Battery drain bugs are routinely patched, especially in the first year after a major watchOS release.
Restart the watch: Hold the side button → Power Off → slide to power off → press Digital Crown to power on. This clears background process accumulation that can cause unusual drain.
Unpair and re-pair: Watch app → tap watch name → (i) → Unpair Apple Watch. Health data is preserved on iPhone. Re-pair and restore from backup. This is the nuclear option that resolves persistent drain from corrupted watchOS processes — most commonly needed after major watchOS upgrades.
🔋 Step 6: Battery Health
Series 7 launched October 2021 — at 4+ years, check battery condition:
- On watch: Settings → General → About — newer watchOS versions show battery health percentage
- Or: Watch app → My Watch → General → (scroll to) Battery Health
- Below 80%: Apple Watch battery service is recommended — Apple charges ~$99 for out-of-warranty battery service
A battery replacement on a Series 7 is worth it if the hardware is otherwise in good condition — the S7 chip runs current watchOS well and replacement adds years of useful life.
