Apple Watch Series 6
Apple Watch Series 6 Not Turning On
Apple Watch Series 6 (September 2020) introduced the blood oxygen sensor and Always-On Display to the standard lineup. At 5+ years old, it's a dependable watch where battery wear is becoming a factor. Here's how to bring it back when it won't turn on.
๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- Completely black, no button response: Dead battery or software crash
- Green/amber LED on charger but watch won't turn on: Very deeply drained battery โ charging but needs more time
- Red lightning bolt on screen: Critically low โ keep charging, don't attempt to power on
- Stuck on Apple logo: watchOS crash โ force restart needed
- Vibrates but no display: Watch is on, Always-On Display issue or screen fault
- Black after drop or impact: Display connector or cracked screen
๐ Step 2: Charge the Series 6
Series 6 uses the standard round magnetic Apple Watch charger (NOT the fast-charge L-cable โ that's Series 7 and later):
- Place the watch on the magnetic charging puck โ confirm the back clicks into the magnetic center
- Connect to a USB adapter (any USB charger works โ 5W minimum)
- Wait 2โ3 minutes for a deeply drained battery to respond
- Look for the green lightning bolt or charging animation
- If nothing after 5 minutes: clean the charging contacts (see Step 3) and try a different adapter and outlet
- At 5+ years: if the battery was left fully drained for months, it may need 10โ15 minutes before any response
๐งน Step 3: Clean Charging Contacts
Series 6 charging contacts accumulate sweat, sunscreen, and outdoor residue:
- Remove from charger
- Gently brush the circular charging area on the watch back with a dry soft toothbrush
- Wipe clean with a dry lint-free cloth
- Clean the charger puck face the same way
- For salt residue from sweat: slightly damp cloth, wipe gently, dry completely before charging
- Try charging again โ dirty contacts are one of the most common causes of Series 6 charging failures
๐ Step 4: Force Restart Series 6
- Press and hold both the Side button (below Digital Crown) and the Digital Crown simultaneously
- Hold for at least 10 seconds
- Continue holding even if the screen stays dark
- Release when the Apple logo appears
- Let the watch boot fully (60โ90 seconds)
๐ก๏ธ Step 5: Temperature and Blood Oxygen Sensor
- Series 6 operates within 0ยฐCโ35ยฐC (32ยฐFโ95ยฐF). Cold-weather shutdowns are common โ bring to room temperature first
- The blood oxygen sensor runs continuously โ this increases battery drain compared to Series 5 and earlier. At 5+ years, battery health may have dropped enough to cause unexpected shutdowns during SpO2 measurements
- Check battery health via the iPhone Watch app โ My Watch โ General โ Usage โ Battery Health. Below 80% = consider replacement
๐ง Step 6: Water and Always-On Display
- Series 6 is WR50 (50m water resistant). After swimming, run Water Lock: swipe up โ tap water droplet โ turn Digital Crown to eject water
- The Always-On Display on Series 6 can appear very dim in bright light โ if the screen looks off but shows a faint display at certain angles, AOD is active and the watch is working normally
- AOD uses more battery than non-AOD models. If battery life is very short at 5 years, disable AOD: Watch app on iPhone โ Display & Brightness โ Always On โ Off
โ Quick Fix Checklist
- โ Charging contacts cleaned
- โ Charger puck face cleaned
- โ Different USB adapter and outlet tried
- โ Charged 5+ minutes โ green LED or animation visible
- โ Force restart: Digital Crown + Side button, 10 seconds
- โ Watch at room temperature
- โ Water Lock ejected after swimming
- โ AOD check in bright light (may appear off but isn't)
๐ง Still Won't Turn On?
At 5+ years, Apple Watch Series 6 battery replacement is often needed. Apple charges $79 out-of-warranty. Third-party repair shops charge $55โ70. Book a Genius Bar appointment for a free diagnostic first.
