Apple Watch Series 5
Apple Watch Series 5 Not Turning On
Apple Watch Series 5 (September 2019) was the first Apple Watch with an Always-On Display (AOD). At 6+ years old, the AOD is one of the leading causes of battery drain that can leave the watch appearing dead. Here's every fix to bring it back.
๐ Step 1: Identify the Symptom
- Completely black, no button response: Dead battery or software crash
- Green LED on charger but watch won't boot: Very drained battery โ needs more time
- Appears off but shows time faintly: Always-On Display is active โ watch is actually working normally
- Apple logo then off: watchOS crash โ force restart
- Vibrates but no display: Watch is on, LTPO display issue
- Went dead faster than usual: AOD + 6-year battery degradation โ very common
๐ Step 2: Check Always-On Display First
This is unique to Series 5 and 6 โ the most common "not turning on" mistake:
- In bright daylight, the AOD can appear completely off. Hold your wrist up and look at the watch from different angles
- In a dark room, the AOD shows a very dim clock face โ if you can see the time faintly, the watch is working perfectly
- Raise your wrist or tap the screen โ the display should brighten to full brightness
- If raising wrist and tapping doesn't wake the display, the watch may need charging or a force restart
๐ Step 3: Charge the Series 5
Series 5 uses the standard round magnetic Apple Watch charger (NOT the L-shaped fast-charge cable):
- Place on the magnetic charging puck โ ensure firm magnetic contact with the watch back
- Connect to a 5W or higher USB adapter
- Wait 2โ3 minutes for the charging animation to appear
- If no response: clean the charging contacts on the watch back (see Step 4)
- At 6 years: the AOD means Series 5 drains faster than non-AOD watches. If frequently going dead overnight, the battery has likely degraded to 75โ80% โ replacement restores normal runtime
๐งน Step 4: Clean Charging Contacts
- Remove from charger
- Use a dry soft-bristle toothbrush to gently clean the circular charging area on the watch back
- Wipe clean with a dry lint-free cloth
- Clean the charger puck face the same way
- Place back on charger and check for the green/amber LED indicator
๐ Step 5: Force Restart
- Press and hold both the Side button (below Digital Crown) and the Digital Crown simultaneously
- Hold for at least 10 seconds
- Release when the Apple logo appears
- Let the watch boot fully (60โ90 seconds)
โก Step 6: AOD Battery Management at 6 Years
The Always-On Display is the biggest battery drain on Series 5:
- AOD keeps the display active at 1Hz at all times โ at 6 years of heavy use, the battery may have dropped to 75% capacity
- Disable AOD temporarily: Watch app on iPhone โ Display & Brightness โ Always On โ Off. This can double effective battery life if the battery is degraded
- Battery replacement ($79 at Apple, $55โ70 at third-party shops) restores normal AOD runtime
- You can check if battery health is available in newer watchOS versions: Watch app โ General โ Usage โ Battery Health
๐ง Step 7: Water and Temperature
- Series 5 is WR50 (50m water resistant). After swimming, run Water Lock: swipe up โ tap water drop โ turn Digital Crown
- Bring to room temperature if stored in cold environments before charging
- After hot workouts: let cool before charging โ thermal protection may have triggered
โ Quick Fix Checklist
- โ AOD checked in dark room โ may appear off but isn't
- โ Charging contacts cleaned
- โ Different USB adapter and outlet tried
- โ Charged 5+ minutes โ green LED visible
- โ Force restart: Digital Crown + Side button, 10 seconds
- โ Watch at room temperature
- โ Water ejected if used recently in water
- โ AOD disabled temporarily to test battery life
๐ง Still Won't Turn On?
Apple Watch Series 5 battery replacement at 6 years is often needed, especially with AOD enabled. Apple charges $79 out-of-warranty. Third-party shops charge $55โ70 with same-day service. Free diagnostic at any Apple Store.
