Apple Watch Series 5 Battery Draining Fast
Apple Watch Series 5 (September 2019) introduced the original Always-On Display — a landmark feature that also immediately became the watch's biggest battery challenge. At 6+ years old, significant battery degradation adds to the problem. Here's how to fix both.
📊 Expected Series 5 Battery Life
- AOD on, standard use: 12-16 hours (Apple rated 18 hours, real-world is lower)
- AOD off, standard use: 16-20 hours
- Workout (GPS + HR): 6-9 hours
- After 6 years of wear: Subtract 25-35% for battery degradation
Series 5 launched September 2019 — at 6+ years old, most batteries have fallen well below 75% capacity. Software fixes help, but battery replacement is likely the real answer at this age.
💡 Step 1: Always-On Display — The Original Drain
Series 5 invented AOD for Apple Watch. The LTPO display keeps time and key information visible at all times — but it significantly impacts battery, especially on a 6-year-old battery:
- On watch: Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On → Off
- Or via iPhone: Watch app → Display & Brightness → Always On → Off
Disabling AOD typically recovers 4-6 hours of daily runtime on Series 5. If your watch barely makes 10-12 hours with AOD on, expect 15-18 hours without it.
Additional AOD tip: Lower the display brightness — AOD power consumption scales with brightness. Even at 50% brightness, AOD drain is noticeably reduced.
❤️ Step 2: Heart Rate and ECG
- Heart Rate: Watch app → Privacy → Heart Rate → limit to workout-only measurements
- ECG / Irregular Rhythm Notifications: Watch app → Heart → Irregular Rhythm Notifications → Off — disables continuous background cardiac monitoring
- High & Low Heart Rate Alerts: Watch app → Heart → turn off if not monitoring for health purposes
📱 Step 3: Notifications and Complications
- Watch app → Notifications — disable wrist notifications for non-critical apps. Every notification wakes the display and haptics
- Simpler watch face: The Modular or Numerals face with 2-3 complications saves more power than feature-rich faces with 5-6 data points
- Watch app → General → Background App Refresh → Off
📡 Step 4: Cellular and Wi-Fi
- Cellular model: If you carry iPhone, disable Watch cellular: Settings → Cellular → off. LTE running when your phone is nearby wastes significant power
- Wi-Fi: The watch uses Wi-Fi for apps when out of Bluetooth range. Ensure your home Wi-Fi is saved — the watch drains more when hunting for a Wi-Fi connection
🔄 Step 5: Software Fixes
Update watchOS: Watch app → My Watch → General → Software Update. Battery bugs are frequently patched — especially after major watchOS releases.
Restart: Hold side button → Power Off → slide to power off → press Digital Crown to power on. Clears background process accumulation.
Unpair and re-pair: The nuclear option but most effective for persistent drain after updates. Watch app → tap watch name → (i) → Unpair Apple Watch. Health data preserved. Re-pair and restore from backup. This clears corrupted processes from previous watchOS versions.
🔋 Step 6: Battery Health — 6 Years In
Series 5 launched September 2019 — check battery condition:
- On watch: Settings → General → About (newer watchOS shows health %)
- Or: Watch app → My Watch → General → Battery Health
- Below 80%: Apple Watch battery service recommended (~$99 out of warranty)
At 6 years old, most Series 5 batteries are at 65-75% or below. Software fixes will help, but a battery replacement is likely the most impactful fix for a Series 5 draining in 8-10 hours.
Note: Series 5 runs current watchOS 11 — the S5 chip is still capable. A battery replacement is worth doing if the watch hardware is otherwise in good condition.
