โ Initial Pairing Requirements
Before troubleshooting, verify these requirements are met โ pairing fails silently when they're not:
- iPhone 10s or later running iOS 18 or later โ Series 10 requires at minimum iOS 18
- Bluetooth must be ON on your iPhone โ Control Center, or Settings โ Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi must be ON on your iPhone โ required even if not connected to a network
- iPhone must be within 10 feet of the watch during initial setup
- Watch must be charged โ pair only when watch battery is above 50%
- Watch app must be installed on iPhone โ available free in the App Store if missing
๐ต Step 1: Reset Bluetooth on iPhone
Bluetooth stack issues are the most common cause of Apple Watch pairing failures:
- Swipe down from the top-right of the iPhone screen to open Control Center
- Tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it OFF โ wait 10 seconds
- Tap it again to turn Bluetooth back ON
- On the Apple Watch, swipe up for Control Center and verify Bluetooth is also on (the two interlocked circles icon)
If the watch was previously paired and is now disconnecting constantly, try this toggle first โ it resolves most "watch keeps disconnecting" issues.
For stuck initial pairing: Toggle Airplane Mode ON then OFF on both the iPhone and the watch. This resets all radios simultaneously and often breaks a pairing deadlock.
๐ Step 2: Restart Both Devices
Always restart both the iPhone and the Apple Watch before attempting more complex fixes:
Restart Apple Watch Series 10:
- Press and hold the side button (the elongated button below the Digital Crown)
- Slide the Power Off slider to the right
- After it powers off, press and hold the side button again to restart
Restart iPhone: Hold side button + volume down โ slide to power off โ wait 30 seconds โ power back on.
After both restart, bring them close together and open the Watch app on your iPhone. The watch and phone often reconnect automatically after a dual restart.
