The Apple Watch SE 2 (2022) is Apple's affordable smartwatch option. If your SE 2 won't turn on, shows a black screen, or seems completely dead, these steps will help diagnose and fix the issue.
Step 1: Force Restart Your Watch
Step 1
A force restart can fix a frozen or unresponsive watch:
- Press and hold both the Side Button AND Digital Crown together
- Keep holding for at least 10-15 seconds
- Release when you see the Apple logo
- Wait 1-2 minutes for the watch to fully boot
This works even if the screen appears completely black.
Step 2: Charge Your Watch
Step 2
A completely dead battery won't show any signs of life:
- Place the watch on its magnetic charger
- Make sure the charger is connected to power
- Look for the charging icon (lightning bolt or green circle)
- Charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to turn on
If completely dead, it may take several minutes before any charging indicator appears.
Step 3: Check the Charging Cable and Adapter
Step 3
Faulty charging accessories are a common problem:
- Try a different Apple Watch charging cable
- Use a different power adapter (at least 5W)
- Try a different wall outlet
- Avoid USB ports on computers — they may not provide enough power
Step 4: Clean the Charging Contacts
Step 4
Dirt or debris can prevent proper charging:
- Clean the back of the watch with a soft, lint-free cloth
- Pay attention to the circular charging area
- Also clean the magnetic charging puck
- If you exercise often, sweat residue may build up
Step 5: Check If It's Actually On
Step 5
The watch might be on with the screen off:
- Tap the screen firmly
- Raise your wrist (Raise to Wake)
- Press the Digital Crown or Side Button
- Cover the screen with your palm, then uncover it
- In a dark room, look for any faint display activity
If you hear sounds or feel haptics but see nothing, the screen may have failed.
Step 6: Check for Water Lock
Step 6
Water Lock disables the touchscreen:
- Press and hold the Digital Crown
- If Water Lock is on, the watch will beep and eject water
- The screen should then respond normally
Step 7: Let It Cool Down or Warm Up
Step 7
Extreme temperatures prevent the watch from operating:
- The Apple Watch SE 2 operates between 0°C and 35°C (32°F to 95°F)
- If too cold, warm it up gradually at room temperature
- If too hot (left in a car, direct sunlight), let it cool down
- The watch won't turn on or charge outside this range
Step 8: Charge for Extended Time
Step 8
A deeply discharged battery needs extra time:
- Leave the watch on the charger for at least 2 hours
- A red lightning bolt icon means it's charging but too low to turn on
- Try force restarting while it's on the charger
Note: If the watch sat completely dead for weeks, the battery may need overnight charging to recover enough to boot.
Step 9: Unpair and Re-Pair (If Partially Working)
Step 9
If the watch turns on but behaves erratically:
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app
- Tap All Watches at the top
- Tap the (i) next to your watch
- Select Unpair Apple Watch
- After unpairing, set it up as new or restore from backup
Step 10: Contact Apple Support
Final Step
If nothing works, hardware repair may be needed:
- The Apple Watch SE 2 has a 1-year warranty (2 years with AppleCare+)
- Check coverage at checkcoverage.apple.com
- Battery service costs $79 if the battery has degraded
- Other repairs may cost more depending on the issue
The Apple Watch SE 2 is not designed for user repair — batteries and screens require professional service.
