Apple Watch Screen Scratched? What You Can Do
A scratch on your Apple Watch screen is annoying every time you glance at the time. But before you panic or start rubbing toothpaste on it, you need to understand what type of glass your Watch has β because that determines which fixes will actually work and which will make things worse.

π Ion-X Glass vs. Sapphire Crystal: Know Your Screen
Apple uses two very different materials across its Watch lineup, and they scratch and shatter differently.
Ion-X Glass (Aluminum Models)
- Found on: Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Sport, and all standard aluminum models (Series 1 through Series 10)
- Hardness: ~6.5 on the Mohs scale β similar to Gorilla Glass on phones
- Scratch resistance: Moderate. Sand, keys, and rough surfaces can leave visible scratches. It is softer than sapphire but more shatter-resistant.
- Shatter resistance: Good. Ion-X glass is more flexible and less likely to crack from impacts compared to sapphire.
Sapphire Crystal (Stainless Steel, Titanium, Ultra Models)
- Found on: All stainless steel, titanium, Hermes, Edition, and Ultra models
- Hardness: ~9 on the Mohs scale β only diamond is harder
- Scratch resistance: Excellent. Sapphire is nearly impossible to scratch with everyday materials. Keys, coins, and most metals will not leave a mark.
- Shatter resistance: Poor. The trade-off for extreme hardness is brittleness. Sapphire is more likely to crack or shatter from a hard impact.
How to check yours: Look at the back of your Apple Watch for the material. If it says "Aluminum," you have Ion-X glass. If it says "Stainless Steel," "Titanium," or "Apple Watch Ultra," you have sapphire.
π« The Toothpaste Myth (and Other Bad Advice)
You will find dozens of YouTube videos and blog posts claiming you can buff scratches out of your Apple Watch with toothpaste, baking soda, or nail polish. Here is the truth:
- Toothpaste: Contains mild abrasives (like calcium carbonate) rated around 2-3 on the Mohs scale. This cannot scratch glass at 6.5+ hardness, which means it also cannot remove scratches from it. At best, toothpaste fills in micro-scratches temporarily with residue, creating an illusion of improvement. At worst, the rubbing motion introduces new micro-scratches and removes any oleophobic coating.
- Baking soda paste: Same problem. Too soft to actually polish glass.
- Nail polish or screen polish: These fill the scratch groove with a clear substance, making it less visible. This is cosmetic camouflage, not a fix. It wears off quickly and can attract dirt.
- Cerium oxide polish: This is the one compound that can actually polish glass β it is used professionally for glass restoration. However, using it on an Apple Watch requires precision and risks removing the oleophobic (fingerprint-resistant) coating permanently. Not recommended for beginners.
Bottom line: If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, no home remedy will remove it. If you cannot feel it, it is likely a surface-level mark that a screen protector can hide.
π‘οΈ Screen Protectors: Prevention and Concealment
The best time to apply a screen protector is before your Watch gets scratched. But even after a scratch, a good protector can hide minor marks and prevent further damage.
Types of Screen Protectors
- Tempered glass protectors: These offer the best feel and clarity. They sit on top of the screen and can make shallow scratches invisible. Look for protectors designed specifically for your Watch size (41mm, 45mm, 49mm, etc.).
- Film protectors (TPU/PET): Thinner and more flexible. They conform better to the Watch's curved edges but do not feel as smooth as glass. Good for full-coverage protection.
- Liquid screen protectors: These apply a nano-coating that adds a thin layer of hardness. They will not hide existing scratches, and their actual protective value is debatable β we generally do not recommend them.
Our recommendation: For aluminum Apple Watches with Ion-X glass, a tempered glass protector is almost essential. For sapphire models, it is less necessary but can prevent the rare catastrophic shatter.
π§ Screen Replacement: Options and Costs
If the scratch is deep, the glass is cracked, or the screen is shattered, replacement is the only real fix.
Apple Official Repair
- Apple treats any screen damage (including scratches) as screen replacement β they do not polish or repair the glass
- AppleCare+ pricing: Accidental damage is covered at a reduced fee β check Apple's current pricing for your model
- Out-of-warranty pricing: Varies significantly by model. Aluminum models are the cheapest to repair; Ultra models are the most expensive. Apple's website lists current out-of-warranty fees for each specific model.
- Apple replaces the entire Watch if the screen cannot be separated (common with older models)
Third-Party Repair
- Independent repair shops can replace Apple Watch screens at lower cost than Apple
- Quality varies β make sure the shop uses OEM-quality OLED panels and proper adhesive for water resistance
- Third-party repair does not affect your other Apple services, but it does void any remaining Apple warranty
DIY Screen Replacement
- Apple Watch screen replacement is significantly harder than iPhone screen replacement
- The screen is glued with strong adhesive and the internal cables are extremely fragile
- Force Touch gasket (on older models) must be replaced correctly or the Watch loses water resistance
- Our honest take: Unless you have micro-soldering experience, DIY Apple Watch screen repair has a very high failure rate. We recommend professional repair for this one.
π€ When to Upgrade Instead of Repair
Sometimes repair costs approach or exceed the value of the Watch itself. Here is a general decision framework:
- Repair if: Your Watch is less than 2 years old, you have AppleCare+, or the repair cost is less than 50% of a replacement
- Upgrade if: Your Watch is 3+ years old (battery is likely degraded too), repair costs exceed 50% of current value, or you are two or more generations behind on features
- Protect the next one: Whatever you decide, put a screen protector and a bumper case on your next Watch from day one. The Apple Watch Ultra's sapphire and titanium offer the best durability if scratch resistance is a priority for you.
