Apple Watch stuck on the pairing animation, can't be found by the Watch app, showing a pairing error code, or disconnecting right after pairing? Covers Apple Watch Series 6 through Ultra 2 and SE 2 with iPhone on iOS 17 and 18.
Confirm: (1) Both devices have Bluetooth ON and are within 1 foot of each other. (2) Apple Watch has at least 50% battery. (3) iPhone is running iOS 17 or later for Series 9/Ultra 2. (4) Apple Watch is not already paired to another iPhone โ if it is, you must unpair it first via the Watch app on the old iPhone, or do a factory reset on the Watch itself.
Restart your iPhone first: hold Side + Volume Down โ slide to power off โ wait 30 seconds โ restart. Then restart the Apple Watch: hold the side button until the power slider appears โ drag to power off โ press side button to start. Once both have restarted, open the Watch app on iPhone โ tap "Start Pairing" and hold the Watch camera over the iPhone screen. Fresh restarts ensure clean Bluetooth states on both devices.
If the Watch is stuck on a pairing animation and won't respond: on the Watch, press and hold the side button until the power slider appears โ press and hold the Digital Crown until "Erase all content and settings" appears โ tap it. This factory resets the Watch without needing the iPhone, clearing any corrupted pairing state. After the reset, the Watch shows the "hello" screen and is ready to pair fresh with the iPhone Watch app.
An Apple Watch can only be paired to one iPhone at a time. If you're setting up a Watch that was previously paired to a different iPhone and that iPhone is available: open the Watch app on the old iPhone โ My Watch โ tap your watch name โ (i) โ Unpair Apple Watch. This also disables Activation Lock (tied to the previous owner's Apple ID). Without unpairing, the Watch will show "Activation Lock" during new setup and won't activate.
Settings โ Bluetooth โ toggle OFF โ wait 10 seconds โ toggle ON. Don't use the Control Center toggle โ it only disconnects devices temporarily without reinitializing the Bluetooth stack. The Settings toggle fully restarts Bluetooth. On the Watch side, swipe up from the watch face โ tap the Bluetooth icon to toggle it off and back on as well.
Settings โ Bluetooth โ find "Apple Watch" under My Devices โ tap (i) โ Forget This Device. Then open the Watch app โ try pairing again from scratch. A Bluetooth pairing entry that's present but corrupted can block re-pairing attempts. Removing it from the system Bluetooth list clears the stale entry and allows a clean pairing negotiation.
Settings โ General โ Transfer or Reset iPhone โ Reset โ Reset Network Settings. This clears all Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi passwords, and network configurations. It's the most thorough Bluetooth reset available on iPhone. After resetting, reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-attempt Watch pairing. The Bluetooth stack reinitializes completely, resolving pairing failures caused by corrupted Bluetooth state that survives normal restarts.
iPhone: Settings โ General โ Software Update. Watch (after a partial pairing): Watch app โ General โ Software Update. watchOS and iOS updates sometimes break pairing compatibility between certain version combinations. Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 require iOS 17 minimum. Series 10 requires iOS 18. Running iOS 16 on an iPhone with a brand new Series 9 will fail every pairing attempt โ the Watch app won't function at all on the older iOS.
Settings โ [Your Name] โ Sign Out โ sign back in with your Apple ID. Apple Watch pairing is tied to iCloud and Apple ID authentication. If your iCloud account has an authentication error or expired token, Watch pairing fails silently. Signing out and back in forces a fresh token refresh and re-establishes Apple ID trust before attempting pairing again.
Watch app โ Start Pairing โ "Pair Apple Watch Manually" (link at the bottom of the camera screen). Select your Watch from the list by name. Manual pairing bypasses the camera QR animation, which occasionally fails in bright light or with certain screen cases. Enter the 6-digit code shown on the Watch screen when prompted. This completes pairing identically to camera pairing but without the camera alignment requirement.
If your Watch won't pair on any iPhone after a factory reset, there may be a hardware fault with the Bluetooth antenna or logic board. PC Medics of NJ diagnoses Apple Watch hardware issues on all models.
