Apple Watch GPS Not Working? How to Fix It

Apple Watch GPS not tracking your run, showing wrong location, or losing signal mid-workout? Here's how to fix GPS issues on all Apple Watch models.

⏱️ 5-20 min 💪 Easy ⌚ All Apple Watch

Common GPS Problems

  • GPS not locking: Watch says "Searching for GPS" at the start of workout
  • Wrong route/distance: Tracked path is inaccurate or jumpy
  • GPS drops mid-workout: Loses signal and falls back to accelerometer
  • No GPS on older models: Series 1-2 have limited GPS — check your model
  • Workouts without GPS data: Outdoor workouts show no map
Check your model: Apple Watch Series 1 has no built-in GPS. Series 2 and later have GPS. Series 5+ have always-on altimeter. Series 6+ have precise dual-frequency GPS.

Fixes to Try

1 Wait for GPS Lock Before Starting

GPS needs time to acquire satellites:

  • Go outside and wait for the GPS icon to turn solid (not animated)
  • This can take 30 seconds to 2 minutes
  • Stand in open sky — buildings, trees, and clouds block GPS
  • Don't start your workout until GPS locks

2 Bring Your iPhone on First Run

Apple Watch uses your iPhone's GPS to calibrate:

  1. Take your iPhone with you on a few outdoor workouts
  2. This calibrates the watch's accelerometer for accurate distance without iPhone
  3. After calibration, GPS-only workouts will be more accurate

3 Restart Your Apple Watch

  1. Press and hold the side button until the power slider appears
  2. Drag the Power Off slider
  3. Press and hold the side button to turn back on
  4. Wait for full restart before starting a workout

4 Reset Location & Privacy on iPhone

GPS calibration data on iPhone can become corrupted:

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone
  2. Tap Reset → Reset Location & Privacy
  3. Restart both your iPhone and Apple Watch
  4. Re-grant location permissions to apps when prompted

5 Update watchOS and iOS

GPS improvements are regularly released:

  1. On iPhone: Watch app → General → Software Update
  2. Also update iPhone: Settings → General → Software Update
  3. Keep both in sync — mismatched versions can cause issues

6 Unpair and Re-pair Apple Watch

A fresh pairing clears corrupted GPS configuration:

  1. On iPhone, open the Watch app
  2. Tap your watch at the top → Unpair Apple Watch
  3. Confirm — this creates a backup automatically
  4. Re-pair and restore from backup
Note: Unpairing takes 10-15 minutes. Make sure both devices are charged.

7 Check Workout App Settings

  1. On Apple Watch, open Settings → Privacy → Location Services
  2. Make sure Workout is set to "While Using"
  3. Also check on iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Workout
