🔍 Identify Your Apple Pencil

  • 1st Generation — Round, charges via Lightning connector under cap
  • 2nd Generation — Flat side, charges magnetically on iPad edge
  • USB-C — Has sliding cap with USB-C port

🛠️ Fix 1: Check Compatibility

Apple Pencil only works with certain iPads:

  • 1st Gen: iPad 6-10th gen, iPad mini 5, iPad Air 3, iPad Pro 9.7"/10.5"/12.9" 1st-2nd gen
  • 2nd Gen: iPad Pro 11" all, iPad Pro 12.9" 3rd+, iPad Air 4th+, iPad mini 6
  • USB-C: iPad 10th gen, iPad Pro with USB-C, iPad Air with USB-C

🛠️ Fix 2: Charge Your Apple Pencil

1st Generation:

  1. Remove the cap
  2. Plug into iPad's Lightning port
  3. Charge for at least 10 minutes

2nd Generation:

  1. Attach to the magnetic strip on iPad edge
  2. Make sure it snaps firmly
  3. Check for charging popup

USB-C:

  1. Slide open the cap
  2. Connect USB-C cable
  3. Or attach magnetically to compatible iPad (pairs but charges slower)

🛠️ Fix 3: Check Apple Pencil Battery

  1. Go to Settings → Apple Pencil (if connected)
  2. Or add Battery widget to Home Screen
  3. If battery is at 0%, charge for 15+ minutes before testing

🛠️ Fix 4: Re-pair Apple Pencil

Forget and reconnect:

  1. Settings → Bluetooth
  2. Find Apple Pencil in device list
  3. Tap (i) → Forget This Device
  4. Re-pair by plugging in (1st gen) or attaching magnetically (2nd gen/USB-C)

🛠️ Fix 5: Restart Your iPad

  1. Press and hold Top + Volume button
  2. Slide to power off
  3. Wait 30 seconds
  4. Turn on and try Apple Pencil again

🛠️ Fix 6: Check Bluetooth

  1. Settings → Bluetooth
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is ON
  3. Toggle OFF, wait 10 seconds, toggle ON
  4. Try reconnecting Apple Pencil

🛠️ Fix 7: Replace the Tip

Worn tips can cause drawing issues:

  1. Unscrew the tip counterclockwise
  2. Inspect for wear (flat spot, damage)
  3. Replace with new tip if worn
  4. Screw new tip on snugly
