Apple Intelligence: Complete Guide — What It Does & How to Use It

Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal AI system built into iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Launched with iOS 18 and expanded in iOS 18.4, it brings smarter Siri, writing tools, image generation, notification summaries, and more — all processed on-device for privacy. Here is everything it can do and how to make the most of it in 2026.

📱 Which Devices Support Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence requires specific hardware — not every Apple device can run it. Here is the full compatibility list as of April 2026:

iPhone

  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max (full support)
  • iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max (full support)
  • iPhone SE 4 (2025) — supported with some limitations

iPad

  • iPad Pro with M1 chip or later
  • iPad Air with M1 chip or later
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro) — 7th generation, 2024

Mac

  • Any Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, or later)

Why the restriction? Apple Intelligence requires at least 8GB of RAM and a Neural Engine powerful enough for on-device AI inference. Older A-series chips simply lack the processing power.

🗣️ Siri Upgrades: What's New

Siri received its biggest upgrade ever with Apple Intelligence. Here is what has changed:

Conversational Context

Siri now remembers context across multiple exchanges. Ask "What's the weather in Philadelphia?" then follow up with "What about tomorrow?" — Siri knows you still mean Philadelphia.

On-Screen Awareness

Siri can see what is displayed on your screen. If a friend texts you an address, say "Get directions to that address" and Siri reads it from Messages. Works across most apps.

In-App Actions

Siri can take actions inside third-party apps: "Send a message to Mom on WhatsApp," "Play my workout playlist in Spotify," or "Open my last document in Google Docs." App developers integrate this via the App Intents framework.

Natural Language Understanding

You no longer need precise phrasing. Siri understands casual speech, pauses, self-corrections, and complex multi-step requests better than ever.

How to Use It

  1. Enable Apple Intelligence: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Turn on Apple Intelligence
  2. Talk naturally — long sentences, follow-ups, and context switches all work
  3. Type to Siri: Double-tap the bottom of the screen to type instead of speak

✍️ Writing Tools

Apple Intelligence adds systemwide writing assistance. Select any text in any app and tap "Writing Tools" to access:

  • Proofread: Fix grammar, spelling, and punctuation with explanations for each change
  • Rewrite: Rephrase your text in a different tone — friendly, professional, or concise
  • Summarize: Condense long text into key points or a brief paragraph
  • Key Points: Extract the main takeaways as a bulleted list
  • Table: Convert unstructured text into a formatted table
  • List: Turn paragraphs into organized lists

Where it works: Mail, Messages, Notes, Safari, Pages, and any app that uses standard text fields. Third-party apps get Writing Tools automatically.

🎨 Image Generation: Image Playground & Genmoji

Image Playground

Create images from text descriptions in three styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. Access it from the Image Playground app, or directly within Messages, Notes, and Keynote.

  • Describe what you want in plain language
  • Add people from your Photos library — the AI creates images that resemble them
  • Choose a style and refine with additional prompts
  • All image generation happens on-device — your prompts never leave your phone

Genmoji

Create custom emoji from text descriptions. Type a description like "cat wearing a cowboy hat riding a skateboard" and Apple Intelligence generates a unique emoji you can send in messages or use as stickers.

Clean Up in Photos

Remove unwanted objects, people, or distractions from photos with a single tap. Circle the object you want gone, and the AI fills in the background naturally. Similar to Google's Magic Eraser but built into Apple Photos.

📬 Smart Notifications & Mail

  • Notification Summaries: Long notification stacks are condensed into brief, readable summaries. Instead of 12 Messages notifications, you see "Sarah and Mike are planning dinner for Friday."
  • Priority Notifications: AI identifies time-sensitive and important notifications and surfaces them at the top
  • Mail Categories: Your inbox is automatically sorted into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions
  • Smart Reply: Mail suggests contextual reply options based on the email content. One tap to respond.
  • Email Summarization: Long emails show a brief summary at the top so you can decide whether to read the full message

🔒 Privacy: How Apple Intelligence Protects Your Data

Apple's key differentiator is privacy-first AI:

  • On-device processing: Most Apple Intelligence features run entirely on your device using the Neural Engine — nothing leaves your phone
  • Private Cloud Compute: When a request requires more power than your device can handle, it is processed on Apple Silicon servers. Your data is never stored, never accessible to Apple, and independently auditable.
  • No training on your data: Apple does not use your personal information to train AI models
  • ChatGPT integration (optional): Siri can route complex questions to ChatGPT, but only with your explicit permission each time. Apple does not share your identity with OpenAI.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Apple Intelligence

  • Features not appearing? Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → make sure Apple Intelligence is turned on. Some features roll out gradually.
  • Slow performance? On-device AI uses significant processing power. Close background apps and ensure your phone is not in Low Power Mode.
  • Writing Tools missing? Make sure you are running iOS 18.1 or later. Some features require iOS 18.4+.
  • Device not supported? If you have an iPhone 15 or older (non-Pro), Apple Intelligence is not available. Consider upgrading to iPhone 16 or waiting for iPhone 17.
