AirPods Pro Not Charging
AirPods Pro not charging โ whether the earbuds won't charge inside the case, the case itself won't charge, or the battery depletes too fast โ every issue has a fix. This guide covers AirPods Pro 1st gen (2019) and AirPods Pro 2nd gen (2022).
๐ Step 1: Isolate the Problem
- AirPods won't charge in the case (case battery fine): Dirty AirPod charging contacts or dirty case charging ports
- Case won't charge via cable: Cable, adapter, or Lightning/USB-C port issue on case
- Case won't charge wirelessly: Wireless charging pad, alignment, or case debris
- One AirPod charges, the other doesn't: That AirPod's contact pins are dirty or the corresponding case port has debris
- Battery depletes very fast: Battery wear (AirPods Pro 1st gen is 5+ years old), or software issue
๐งน Step 2: Clean the Charging Contacts โ Most Common Fix
AirPods Pro charge via small metal contact pins at the base of the stem. Earwax, skin oils, and debris on these contacts or inside the case charging ports is the most common charging failure:
- Remove the AirPods from the case
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth or a dry cotton swab to clean the metal contact pins on the bottom of each AirPod stem
- Inspect the inside of the case โ look at the two charging contact points at the bottom of each AirPod slot. Clean with a dry cotton swab, removing any visible debris or residue
- Do NOT use liquids inside the case charging ports โ even a small amount of moisture can damage the contacts
- Place AirPods back in case โ the amber/green LED should appear within a few seconds if contacts are clean and making connection
๐ Step 3: Case Charging โ Cable and Port
AirPods Pro 1st gen uses Lightning; AirPods Pro 2nd gen uses USB-C:
- Try a different cable for the case
- Try a different power adapter
- Test with a different wall outlet
- For Lightning (Pro 1): inspect the port for lint with a flashlight. Clean with a wooden toothpick if lint is present
- For USB-C (Pro 2): same inspection and cleaning applies
๐ Step 4: Wireless Charging
Both AirPods Pro generations support Qi wireless charging. AirPods Pro 2 also supports Apple Watch charger (MagSafe puck):
- Try a different wireless charging pad โ not all Qi pads work equally well
- Ensure the case is centered on the pad โ the LED should confirm charging
- Remove the case from any silicone case cover โ these can reduce Qi efficiency
- Clean the bottom of the case โ debris on the Qi coil area blocks inductive coupling
๐ Step 5: Reset AirPods Pro
- Place both AirPods in the case and close the lid
- Wait 30 seconds, then open the lid
- On iPhone: Settings โ Bluetooth โ tap (i) next to AirPods Pro โ Forget This Device
- With the lid open and AirPods inside, press and hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber then white
- Re-pair with iPhone โ hold case near iPhone with lid open
A factory reset clears firmware bugs that can cause charging irregularities.
๐ฑ Step 6: Check Battery Health in Settings
- Open the case near iPhone with lid open โ AirPods battery widget appears
- Or ask Siri: "What's the battery life of my AirPods?"
- Or: Settings โ Bluetooth โ (i) next to AirPods โ Battery
- AirPods Pro 1st gen (2019): 5+ years old โ battery degradation is expected. Apple offers AirPod replacement for $69/each out of warranty when battery is serviceable
๐ Step 7: Firmware Update
AirPods Pro update firmware automatically when in the case, case connected to power, and within Bluetooth range of a paired iPhone. If charging has been erratic since a firmware update, a factory reset (Step 5) typically resolves firmware-related charging bugs.
