ANC feels weak, the option is missing from settings, only one side cancels noise, or it stopped working after an update? All fixes for AirPods Pro 1st and 2nd gen on iOS 17 and iOS 18.
Re-run Ear Tip Fit Test immediately: Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods Pro → Ear Tip Fit Test. ANC effectiveness drops 40–70% with a poor seal. If the test shows "Adjust" or "Try another size," swap the ear tips before troubleshooting anything else.
Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to your AirPods Pro → Ear Tip Fit Test → Continue → play audio. The test plays a brief tone and measures the acoustic seal using the inward-facing microphone. If it shows "Good Seal" on both sides but ANC still feels weak, the issue is software. If it shows "Adjust" or prompts you to try another size, the physical seal is inadequate — switch to the included small, medium-large, or XS (AirPods Pro 2) tip sizes until the test passes.
AirPods Pro use three microphones — one outward-facing (captures external noise) and one inward-facing (measures ear canal leakage). If either microphone mesh is clogged with earwax, skin oils, or debris, ANC performance degrades significantly. Use a dry cotton swab to gently clean the mesh grilles at the tip of each AirPod. Never use water or cleaning sprays near the microphones. If the mesh is heavily blocked, Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Put AirPods Pro in ears → press and hold the stem to switch through Noise Cancellation → Transparency → Off → back to Noise Cancellation. Sometimes the ANC processor gets into a stuck state where it's technically active but not processing correctly. Cycling modes forces a fresh initialization of the adaptive audio pipeline.
AirPods Pro firmware updates install automatically when the AirPods are in the case, near your iPhone, and the iPhone is charging. To check current firmware: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) next to AirPods Pro → scroll to "About" section → Firmware Version. Compare to the latest version at apple.com/airpods-pro/specs. To force an update: put AirPods in case, connect case to power, keep iPhone nearby on charger for 30+ minutes. Firmware updates can dramatically improve ANC performance — don't skip this step.
Settings → Bluetooth → (i) next to AirPods Pro → Forget This Device. Then open the AirPods case near your iPhone and re-pair fresh. This clears all stored acoustic calibration data and forces a clean re-enrollment of your ear canal profile. ANC performance often improves noticeably after a fresh pair because the adaptive model starts from scratch rather than using stale calibration data.
With AirPods Pro in the case and lid open: press and hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber then white. This factory resets the AirPods and clears all firmware state, acoustic calibration, and device pairing data. Then re-pair to your iPhone. This is more thorough than the Forget Device step above and resolves persistent ANC failures that survive firmware updates.
AirPods Pro 2 introduced "Adaptive Audio" — a dynamic mode that blends ANC and Transparency based on environment. If you're using Adaptive Audio mode (the default after iOS 16 update), it may be intentionally letting in some sound in certain environments. Switch explicitly to "Noise Cancellation" mode via Control Center → long-press the ANC button → select Noise Cancellation (not Adaptive Audio). Pure ANC mode is more aggressive than Adaptive Audio.
Settings → General → Software Update. Also check: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) → Personalized Volume — if this is ON, iOS adjusts volume based on your listening habits and environment, which can interact with ANC behavior. Try toggling it off temporarily to isolate. iOS 17.4 included specific ANC calibration improvements for AirPods Pro 2.
AirPods Pro ANC is optimized for low-to-mid frequency noise (airplane engines, HVAC, traffic) — it's less effective against high-frequency sounds (human speech, keyboard clicks, sharp transients). If you feel ANC is weak against voice noise specifically, this is a fundamental limitation of feedforward ANC technology, not a malfunction. For voice environments, Transparency mode with volume up actually provides better intelligibility than ANC. If ANC doesn't noticeably reduce low hums and rumbles, that's when to suspect a hardware/software fault.
If ANC stays weak after a factory reset, firmware update, and ear tip swap, the outward microphone may be damaged. PC Medics of NJ can diagnose AirPods Pro hardware issues and advise on repair vs. replacement.
