Lint and dust cause most charging issues. These tools fix it for $10.

Dirty contacts are the #1 cause. Look at the bottom of each AirPod stem and inside the case at the magnetic charge points. You'll see small gold pins.
Cheap or counterfeit cables fail more than the case. Use a known-good Apple-branded MFi cable. Test in 2 different outlets.
If your case supports wireless charging (most do): place on a Qi pad. If wireless works but wired doesn't, your case's port is dead — replacement case is $99 from Apple.
Sometimes the firmware gets stuck. Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods → Forget This Device. Then place case near iPhone with lid open and re-pair.
Open the case lid. Look at the small LED. Amber when charging, green when full. If no LED at all: the case battery is fully dead and might have failed entirely. Try charging for 30 minutes and re-check.
Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods. If a firmware version number doesn't appear, plug case into power, place near iPhone, and wait 30 min — Apple pushes firmware automatically.
If cleaning + cable test + re-pair don't work, you need a replacement case ($99 Apple, $29 with AppleCare+) or replacement set. Apple doesn't repair AirPods cases — they swap them.
When your AirPods charging case stops charging, your buds can't be powered. It's the most critical part of the system. Let's fix it.
The Lightning connector (on AirPods Pro Gen 1) or USB-C (Gen 2) gets clogged with lint and debris, preventing proper charging contact.
Process: Use a dry toothpick to gently scrape inside the port, removing lint. Blow out dust with compressed air (short bursts). Wipe with a dry cloth. Try charging again.
Gen 2 uses MagSafe charging, which requires proper alignment. If the case is misaligned, charging fails.
Inspect: Look at the charging pin connectors on both the case and charger. They should align perfectly. If the case slides around on the charger, the MagSafe magnets might be weak or the charging pads misaligned.
The charger itself might be broken. Try a different Lightning cable/USB-C cable and power adapter (from another Apple device if possible).
The wall outlet might be the problem. Plug another device (iPhone, lamp) into the same outlet to verify it works.
A reset can restore charging communication between case and buds.
Process: Open the case, go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap info next to AirPods → Forget This Device. Hold the setup button on the back of the case 15 seconds. The LED flashes amber then white. Pair again.
On iPhone: Open Settings → Bluetooth → tap info next to AirPods Pro → Battery. The percentage shown is the case's current capacity. Below 50% = battery degradation is severe.
If the port is visibly corroded, damaged, or the charger connector doesn't fit snugly, the port is likely damaged beyond DIY cleaning.
Port replacement requires opening the case and soldering a new connector. Cost: $50–$80 at third-party shops, $99–$149 at Apple.
AirPods cases degrade battery health over time (like all lithium batteries). After 2–3 years, charging capacity drops significantly.
Battery replacement: $50–$100 third-party, $99–$129 at Apple.
A new AirPods Pro case costs $100–$130. If repair exceeds $80, replacement might be smarter.
