AirPods Pro 2 Noise Cancellation Not Working

AirPods Pro 2 (2nd generation, 2022+) use a custom H2 chip with up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than the original AirPods Pro. When ANC feels weak, stops working, or Adaptive Audio behaves unexpectedly, these fixes resolve the most common causes.

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Confirm ANC Is Actually Enabled

The most common reason ANC "doesn't work" is that it's not active:

  • Press and hold the stem of either AirPod for 1โ€“2 seconds to cycle through modes: ANC โ†’ Transparency โ†’ Adaptive Audio โ†’ Off. You'll hear a chime and feel a click for each switch
  • Check Control Center: Swipe down โ†’ long-press the volume slider โ†’ the ANC/Transparency/Adaptive toggle appears at the bottom. Confirm Active Noise Cancellation is selected (not Transparency or Off)
  • Check Settings: Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ AirPods โ†’ [your AirPods Pro 2] โ†’ confirm Noise Cancellation is available and not locked by an accessibility setting
  • Adaptive Audio (iOS 17+): This new mode blends ANC and Transparency dynamically. If it doesn't feel like strong ANC, that's by design โ€” switch to pure ANC mode if you need maximum isolation

๐Ÿ‘‚ Step 2: Ear Tip Fit โ€” The Most Common ANC Killer

AirPods Pro 2 ANC effectiveness is entirely dependent on getting a proper ear seal. Even a small gap dramatically reduces noise cancellation:

  1. Run Ear Tip Fit Test: Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ tap the โ“˜ next to your AirPods Pro 2 โ†’ Ear Tip Fit Test. Play the test tone โ€” it measures seal quality and recommends a size change if needed
  2. Try different ear tip sizes: AirPods Pro 2 comes with XS, S, M, and L tips. Most people assume they need M, but many need S or L for optimal seal. Try all sizes
  3. Re-seat the ear tips: Remove and firmly reattach the silicone tips โ€” they must click into place. A partially seated tip creates a gap
  4. Check for ear tip damage: Inspect for tears, cracks, or deformation in the silicone. Damaged tips break the seal
  5. Insertion technique: Pull your ear up and back slightly while inserting to straighten the ear canal โ€” this dramatically improves seal for many people

๐Ÿ”„ Step 3: Firmware Update

Apple regularly updates AirPods Pro 2 firmware to improve ANC performance. Many ANC issues are resolved by firmware updates:

  1. Connect your AirPods Pro 2 to your iPhone
  2. Go to Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ โ“˜ next to AirPods Pro 2
  3. Scroll down to find the firmware version
  4. Check the current firmware at theapplewiki.com/wiki/AirPods_Pro_(2nd_generation) to see the latest release
  5. To force a firmware update: Put AirPods in the case, connect the case to power (MagSafe or Lightning), keep iPhone nearby with Bluetooth on, and leave for 30+ minutes. Updates install automatically when conditions are met

๐Ÿ”ƒ Step 4: Reset AirPods Pro 2

A reset clears all saved settings and re-pairs the AirPods fresh โ€” fixes many persistent ANC glitches:

  1. Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then open the lid
  3. On your iPhone: Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ โ“˜ next to AirPods Pro 2 โ†’ Forget This Device
  4. With the lid open, press and hold the button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber, then white
  5. Hold the case near your iPhone and follow the pairing prompt
  6. After pairing, run the Ear Tip Fit Test again and then test ANC

๐Ÿ“ฑ Step 5: iPhone Settings and Calibration

  • Personalized Volume: Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ โ“˜ โ†’ turn off Personalized Volume temporarily. This adaptive feature can sometimes interfere with perceived ANC
  • Loudness equalization: Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ Audio/Visual โ†’ turn off Phone Noise Cancellation (this is for call audio, separate from AirPods ANC but can conflict)
  • Re-enable Automatic Ear Detection: Settings โ†’ Bluetooth โ†’ โ“˜ โ†’ Automatic Ear Detection ON. When this is off, ANC behavior can be inconsistent
  • Disable Headphone Safety: Settings โ†’ Sounds & Haptics โ†’ Headphone Safety โ€” if this is reducing your volume, it can make ANC feel weaker (you're hearing more noise relative to reduced audio)

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Step 6: Environmental Factors

AirPods Pro 2 ANC has physical limits that are worth understanding:

  • Wind noise: AirPods Pro 2 ANC doesn't suppress wind well โ€” in fact, high wind can make ANC sound worse due to microphone turbulence. Switch to Transparency or Off in strong wind outdoors
  • High-frequency noise: ANC excels at low-frequency rumble (planes, trains, HVAC). It's less effective against high-pitched voices or sharp sounds โ€” this is a physical limitation of all ANC systems
  • Very loud environments: ANC has a maximum attenuation range (~30dB for AirPods Pro 2). Extremely loud environments (construction sites, concerts) will still be audible
  • Pressure equalization: Some users feel a "pressure" sensation with ANC โ€” this is normal. If uncomfortable, try Adaptive Audio mode which is gentler

๐Ÿงน Step 7: Clean the Microphone Meshes

The AirPods Pro 2 use multiple microphones for ANC feedback and feedforward. Blocked microphones severely degrade ANC performance:

  1. Inspect the small microphone ports on each AirPod โ€” there are ports at the top of the stem and near the speaker opening
  2. Use a dry, soft-bristle brush (like a clean, dry toothbrush or the brush included in Apple's cleaning kit) to gently sweep across the meshes
  3. Use a clean, dry lint-free cloth to wipe the outside
  4. Never use water, compressed air directly into ports, or sharp objects
  5. Earwax buildup near the speaker mesh is extremely common and blocks both audio and microphone โ€” clean gently with a dry cotton swab

โœ… Quick Fix Checklist

  • โ˜ ANC mode confirmed active (not Transparency or Off)
  • โ˜ Ear Tip Fit Test passed โ€” correct size tip seated firmly
  • โ˜ AirPods firmware updated to latest version
  • โ˜ AirPods reset and re-paired
  • โ˜ Microphone meshes clean and unobstructed
  • โ˜ Automatic Ear Detection enabled
  • โ˜ Not in high-wind environment (ANC's weakness)

๐Ÿ”ง ANC Still Not Working After All Fixes?

If ANC is completely absent (no change when switching modes) after a reset, one of the internal microphones may be faulty. AirPods Pro 2 are covered by Apple's 1-year warranty โ€” if the ANC hardware is defective, Apple will replace them. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a diagnostic.
