AirPods Pro 2 Crackling Sound - Fix Guide
Hearing crackling, popping, or static sounds from your AirPods Pro 2? Here's how to fix audio quality issues.
🔍 Types of Crackling Issues
- Crackling during music playback
- Static noise with ANC enabled
- Popping sounds when moving head
- Crackling during phone calls
- Random pops and clicks
- One AirPod crackles, other is fine
🛠️ Fix 1: Clean the Speaker Mesh
Earwax and debris are the #1 cause of crackling:
- Remove the silicone ear tips
- Use a dry, soft-bristled brush (clean toothbrush works)
- Gently brush the speaker mesh pointing downward
- Use a dry cotton swab around the edges
- Clean the ear tips with water and let them dry completely
⚠️ Warning: Never use water, alcohol, or sharp objects on the speaker mesh. This can cause permanent damage.

🛠️ Fix 2: Try Different Ear Tips
Poor seal can cause ANC issues that sound like crackling:
- Try all three ear tip sizes (S, M, L)
- Settings → AirPods → Ear Tip Fit Test
- Get a "Good Seal" result for both ears
🛠️ Fix 3: Reset AirPods Pro 2
- Put AirPods in the charging case
- Close the lid and wait 30 seconds
- Open the lid
- Press and hold the setup button on the back for 15 seconds
- Status light should flash amber, then white
- Re-pair with your device
🛠️ Fix 4: Turn Off Automatic Ear Detection
Faulty sensors can cause audio glitches:
- Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods
- Toggle off "Automatic Ear Detection"
- Test audio playback
- If fixed, sensors may need cleaning or repair
🛠️ Fix 5: Disable Spatial Audio
- Open Control Center
- Long-press the volume slider
- Tap "Spatial Audio" to turn it off
- Or: Settings → AirPods → Spatial Audio → Off
🛠️ Fix 6: Update Firmware
AirPods Pro 2 firmware updates automatically:
- Put AirPods in case near your iPhone
- Connect case to power
- Make sure iPhone is on Wi-Fi
- Leave for 30+ minutes
Check version: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) → Firmware Version

- Settings → Bluetooth
- Tap (i) next to AirPods Pro
- Tap "Forget This Device"
- Put AirPods in case, open lid near iPhone
- Follow the setup animation

Rule out the source device:
- Try different apps (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube)
- Test with a different iPhone/iPad/Mac
- Play downloaded music (rules out streaming issues)
- Test wired headphones on the same device

Apple acknowledged crackling issues in original AirPods Pro and extended service coverage. While AirPods Pro 2 are generally improved, similar issues can occur.
If your AirPods Pro 2 are under warranty and crackling persists after all fixes:
- Contact Apple Support
- They may replace affected AirPods for free
