Apple's tuning is warm + balanced. Bass is controlled, not boomy. Mids are present. Treble is detailed but not fatiguing. Spatial Audio with head tracking creates impressive 3D soundstage. Lossless audio via USB-C cable (24-bit/48kHz). Sound profile is "set it and forget it" — minimal EQ needed.
Bose tunes slightly bass-emphasized — more "fun" sound. Detail is excellent. Bose Immersive Audio (their answer to Spatial Audio) is good but not as polished as Apple's. Lossless over wired connection. App-based EQ for customization.
Winner: Tie. Both are excellent. Apple tilts toward studio-monitor accuracy; Bose tilts toward enjoyable consumer sound.
Excellent. Reduces airplane engine drone, café chatter, traffic. About as good as ANC gets — except for Bose.
Industry-leading. Slightly stronger ANC than AirPods Max, especially in low frequencies (engine noise, HVAC). The reason frequent flyers swear by Bose.
Winner: Bose QC Ultra, by a small margin. Both excellent.
Seamless. Pair once with iPhone → works automatically across iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Vision Pro. Audio handoff between devices. "Hey Siri" hands-free. Find My works (Apple tracks them like AirPods). Spatial Audio with Apple Music + Apple TV+ + Apple Vision Pro. AirPods Conversation Awareness (auto-pauses for nearby voices).
Standard Bluetooth pairing. Bose app works on iOS for settings + EQ. No Find My. No Hey Siri. Manual pairing switching between devices (or use Bose's multipoint, which works but is less smooth than Apple's handoff).
Winner: AirPods Max, by a wide margin for all-Apple users.
Heavy (385g). Premium aluminum + steel construction. Mesh canopy. Cushy memory foam ear cups. After 2-3 hours, head fatigue from weight is noticeable.
Lighter (250g). Plastic construction (looks less premium). Plush ear cushions. All-day wearable without fatigue. Many find them more comfortable for long sessions.
Winner: Bose QC Ultra for long sessions. AirPods Max for short premium use.
20 hours with ANC. Fast charge: 5 min for 1.5 hours. Lightning-replacement USB-C in 2024 refresh.
24 hours with ANC. Same charge port (USB-C). Slightly longer.
Winner: Bose, by 4 hours. Practical difference for long-haul travel.
9 microphones for ANC + voice. Voice Isolation feature uses on-device ML to remove background noise. Excellent for calls.
6 mics. Adaptive noise reduction. Very good but not quite as clean for voice as AirPods Max.
Winner: AirPods Max for call quality.
"Smart Case" puts headphones in ultra-low-power mode (doesn't power off fully). Many users find the case ugly + unprotective. Often shopped with third-party hard case.
Hard zipper case included. Folds for compact carry. Travel-friendly out of the box.
Winner: Bose. Travel design is more practical.
AirPods Max launched at premium tier. Bose QC Ultra costs less at MSRP. Both regularly discounted to similar tiers during holidays.
Apple's flagship over-ears. Lossless via USB-C cable. Spatial Audio with head tracking. Full Apple ecosystem integration. Best for committed Apple users who never leave the ecosystem.
Shop AirPods Max →Bose's flagship. Class-leading noise cancellation. Lighter for long wear. Better for travelers + long sessions. Multi-platform if you use mixed Apple/Android/Windows devices.
Shop Bose QC Ultra →Sony's flagship competes with both. Multipoint Bluetooth, app customization, good ANC. Less elegant integration with Apple, but worth comparing if you want maximum flexibility.
Shop Sony WH-1000XM6 →If you go between over-ears and earbuds, AirPods Pro 2 give you 80% of AirPods Max's Apple integration in a pocketable form. Many own both Max + Pro 2 for different use cases.
