AirPods Max Not Charging

AirPods Max 1st gen (December 2020) uses Lightning. AirPods Max 2nd gen (September 2024) switched to USB-C. Both have the same core charging troubleshooting steps — plus some quirks unique to over-ear headphone form factor. Here's every fix.

⏱️ 5-15 minutes 💪 Easy 💰 Free

🔍 Step 1: Identify the Symptom

  • No charging indicator (LED doesn't light): Cable, adapter, or charging port issue
  • Battery depletes rapidly even when stored: Smart Case not triggering low-power mode — or 1st gen Lightning port charging issue
  • Charges very slowly: Low-wattage adapter — AirPods Max charge fastest with 20W+ USB-C PD
  • LED amber but battery not increasing: Let it charge longer — AirPods Max LED behavior can be confusing
  • Charges with one cable but not another: Cable capability mismatch

🔌 Step 2: Check the Charging Port — Lightning vs USB-C

Know which generation you have:

  • AirPods Max 1st gen (Dec 2020): Lightning port. At 5+ years, lint accumulation is possible
  • AirPods Max 2nd gen (Sep 2024): USB-C port. Newer and less likely to have lint, but check for debris

For Lightning (1st gen):

  1. Inspect port with flashlight — look for lint at the back
  2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently remove debris
  3. Try a different MFi-certified Lightning cable

For USB-C (2nd gen):

  1. Inspect for debris
  2. Try a different USB-C PD cable rated at 30W+

⚡ Step 3: Adapter Wattage

AirPods Max have a relatively large battery (up to 20 hours playback). Charging speed depends on adapter wattage:

  • 5W: Very slow — may take 4+ hours for a full charge
  • 12W-20W: Standard speed
  • 20W USB-C PD: Recommended for comfortable charging speed
  • AirPods Max do not support fast charging the way iPhones do — any USB-C PD adapter charges at a similar rate once above the minimum threshold

🎧 Step 4: Smart Case and Low-Power Mode

AirPods Max 1st gen have a unique "Smart Case" that triggers ultra-low-power mode:

  • When stored in the Smart Case, AirPods Max enter a very low-power state that extends standby battery significantly
  • If not using the Smart Case, AirPods Max consume more standby battery
  • When charging: remove from case if charging via cable — the case doesn't pass through charging current
  • The LED on the headphone indicates charging status — amber = charging, green = charged

AirPods Max 2nd gen uses a different case design — check Apple's documentation for the specific case behavior of your generation.

🔄 Step 5: Reset AirPods Max

  1. Press and hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown simultaneously for 15 seconds
  2. LED will flash amber then white — reset complete
  3. Re-pair with iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → select AirPods Max

A factory reset can resolve firmware bugs that prevent proper charging behavior.

🔋 Step 6: Battery Status

  • Ask Siri: "What's my AirPods Max battery level?"
  • Or check iPhone battery widget
  • AirPods Max 1st gen (Dec 2020): 4+ years old — battery wear is becoming a factor
  • Apple offers AirPods Max battery service for worn batteries — contact Apple Support for pricing
