The good news: AirPods Max ear cups are replaceable and removable by design—Apple made this intentional for longevity.

What You'll Need

Buy Replacement Ear Cups

Step-by-Step Replacement

Step 1 - Power Off Your AirPods Max

Make sure your AirPods Max are powered off before starting. Fold the headphones into a compact position.

Step 2 - Locate the Ear Cup Connectors

Look at the outer edge of the ear cup. You'll see a small connector point where the ear cup connects to the metallic band. The ear cups are attached via a magnetic connector.

Step 3 - Gently Peel Off the Old Ear Cup

Starting from one edge, gently peel the ear cup away from the connector. Use steady, even pressure. The magnetic connection will release easily—you should hear a soft click. Do NOT pull hard or twist, just peel smoothly.

Step 4 - Inspect the Connector

Once the ear cup is removed, inspect the small magnetic connector on the headphone band. It should be clean and free of debris. If dusty, gently wipe with a dry microfiber cloth.

Step 5 - Align the New Ear Cup

Take the new ear cup and align the connector point (usually marked with a small dot or indent) with the magnetic connector on the headphone. The magnetic alignment should guide it into place.

Step 6 - Press Into Place

Press the new ear cup firmly onto the connector. You should feel or hear a magnetic click as it seats fully. Press around the entire edge to ensure it's seated evenly. The cup should feel snug and not wobble.

Step 7 - Repeat for Second Cup

Repeat steps 3-6 for the other ear cup. Now both cups should be fresh and secure.

Step 8 - Power On and Test

Power on your AirPods Max and verify they still work. Put them on and make sure the ear cups feel comfortable and secure. They might feel slightly stiff if brand new—they'll loosen up with wear.
