AirPods Case Not Charging?
AirPods case won't charge when plugged in? No LED light? Here's how to diagnose and fix AirPods charging case problems.
Understanding the LED Light
- Amber light (case closed): Case is charging
- Green light (case closed): Case fully charged
- Amber light (case open): AirPods need charging
- Green light (case open): AirPods fully charged
- No light: Case is dead or has an issue
Fixes to Try
1 Clean the Lightning/USB-C Port
Debris blocking the port is the #1 cause:
- Use a wooden or plastic toothpick (NOT metal)
- Gently scrape out any lint or debris from the port
- Use a soft brush or compressed air
- Shine a flashlight to check for remaining debris
⚠️ Never use metal objects in the charging port — you can damage the pins.
2 Try a Different Cable & Charger
Rule out charging accessories:
- Use an Apple-certified cable (MFi certified)
- Try a different USB port or wall adapter
- Avoid cheap third-party cables
- Test with the cable that came with your AirPods
3 Try Wireless Charging (If Supported)
AirPods Pro and AirPods 2+ support wireless charging:
- Place case on a Qi-certified wireless charger
- Center the case on the charger
- Remove any case or cover on the AirPods case
- Look for amber LED to confirm charging
If wireless charging works but wired doesn't, the Lightning/USB-C port is damaged.
4 Leave It Charging for 30+ Minutes
If completely dead, the case may need time to "wake up":
- Plug in and leave for at least 30 minutes
- Don't check for LED immediately
- After 30 min, open and close the lid to trigger LED
5 Reset the AirPods
A factory reset can fix firmware glitches:
- Put both AirPods in the case, close lid
- Wait 30 seconds, then open lid
- On iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → tap "i" next to AirPods → Forget This Device
- With lid open, press and hold button on back of case for 15 seconds
- LED should flash amber then white
- Re-pair with your device
6 Clean the Case Interior
Debris inside can block charging contacts:
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth
- Clean the metal contacts inside the case
- Clean the bottom of each AirPod
- Use a dry cotton swab for hard-to-reach areas
7 Check for Swelling
Battery swelling is a safety issue:
- Does the case feel bulged or deformed?
- Does the lid not close properly anymore?
- ⚠️ Stop using immediately and contact Apple

When to Replace the Case
If none of these fixes work:
- The charging port may be physically damaged
- The battery inside the case may be dead
- You can buy a replacement case from Apple (AirPods don't need replacing)
- Check if still under warranty or AppleCare+
