AirPods 4 Not Connecting

AirPods 4 (September 2024) come in two versions: standard AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Both use the H2 chip with Bluetooth 5.3 and feature USB-C charging cases. When they won't connect, pair, or keep dropping, these fixes cover every scenario.

🔍 Step 1: Identify the Connection Problem

  • Won't pair for the first time: iCloud account issue or setup problem
  • Previously paired but won't connect now: Connected to another device, Bluetooth glitch
  • Connects then immediately disconnects: Low battery, interference, or firmware issue
  • Connected but audio plays from phone speakers: Audio routing issue
  • Shows in Bluetooth but won't play audio: App audio routing conflict
  • Only one AirPod connects: Battery mismatch or hardware issue

🔋 Step 2: Check Battery and Case

Low battery is the most common silent cause of connection failures:

  1. Put both AirPods 4 back in the case — wait 30 seconds, then open the lid near your iPhone
  2. The battery popup should appear on your iPhone showing case and earbud charge levels
  3. If either AirPod is below 10%, charge first. AirPods 4 with very low battery will connect then immediately drop
  4. Charge the case via USB-C until the LED shows solid white (full) or amber (charging)
  5. AirPods 4 deliver up to 5 hours of listening on a charge, or 30 hours total with the case

📱 Step 3: Fix Automatic Device Switching

AirPods 4 use iCloud to automatically switch between your Apple devices — this is the #1 cause of "not connecting" complaints:

  • Your AirPods may have automatically switched to your iPad, Mac, or another iPhone logged into the same Apple ID
  • To manually connect: On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap your AirPods 4 from the list → they'll connect to this device
  • To prevent auto-switching: Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to AirPods 4 → Connect to This iPhone → set to "When Last Connected to This iPhone" instead of "Automatically"
  • On Mac: Click the Bluetooth menu → AirPods 4 → Connect. This forces them to your Mac

🔄 Step 4: Toggle Bluetooth and Restart

  1. Toggle Bluetooth off and on: Settings → Bluetooth → toggle off, wait 10 seconds, toggle on. Or use Control Center
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode: Swipe down → enable Airplane Mode for 30 seconds → disable. This resets all radio stacks including Bluetooth
  3. Restart your iPhone: Power off fully, wait 30 seconds, power back on. Then open AirPods case near iPhone
  4. Put AirPods back in case: Close lid, wait 15 seconds, open lid within 5cm of your iPhone

🌐 Step 5: iCloud and Apple ID Fixes

AirPods 4 tie their pairing to your Apple ID — iCloud sync issues can cause connection problems across devices:

  • Sign out and back into iCloud: Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out, then sign back in. This re-syncs AirPod pairing data across your devices
  • Check that iCloud is active: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → make sure iCloud Drive is enabled. AirPod settings sync via iCloud
  • Shared Apple ID devices: If family members share an Apple ID, AirPods will try to connect to all of their devices. Each person should use their own Apple ID
  • Two-factor authentication: If you recently changed your Apple ID password, iCloud may need to re-authenticate on each device

🔃 Step 6: Reset AirPods 4

A full reset clears all pairing data and lets you start fresh:

  1. Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then open the lid
  3. On your iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to AirPods 4 → Forget This Device → confirm
  4. With lid open, press and hold the Setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds
  5. The LED will flash amber 3 times, then white — reset complete
  6. Hold the open case near your iPhone — the pairing prompt will appear
  7. Pair and test

📡 Step 7: Interference and Environment

  • Distance: Bluetooth 5.3 has excellent range but walls, metal, and other 2.4GHz devices (microwaves, baby monitors, Wi-Fi routers) cause interference. Stay within 10m with line-of-sight
  • Crowded Bluetooth environments: In airports, gyms, or offices with many Bluetooth devices, connection can be unstable. This is a Bluetooth protocol limitation
  • Thick phone cases: Some metal-reinforced cases can interfere with Bluetooth antenna performance
  • Firmware update: Connect AirPods to iPhone, put in case on charger near iPhone — firmware updates install automatically over 20–30 minutes. Updated firmware often fixes connection bugs

✅ Quick Fix Checklist

  • ☐ Battery above 20% on both AirPods and case
  • ☐ Not connected to another Apple device (check all devices)
  • ☐ Bluetooth toggled off/on
  • ☐ Airplane Mode cycled
  • ☐ Auto-switching set to "When Last Connected" if preferred
  • ☐ iCloud signed in and syncing
  • ☐ Full reset performed if all else fails
  • ☐ Firmware updated (case on charger near iPhone)

🔧 Still Not Connecting?
