AirPods 4 Not Charging

AirPods 4 (September 2024) use USB-C charging for both the standard model and ANC version. If your AirPods 4 or their case won't charge, the issue is often a dirty port, bad cable, or power adapter problem โ€” not a defective battery. These fixes work for both the earbuds and the case.

๐Ÿ” Step 1: Identify What Won't Charge

AirPods 4 have two separate batteries: one in each earbud and one in the case. Troubleshooting depends on what's not charging:

  • Case won't charge: USB-C port issue, bad cable/adapter, or case battery failure
  • AirPods won't charge in case: Dirty charging contacts on earbuds or case interior
  • One AirPod won't charge: Contact corrosion on that earbud
  • Case charges but AirPods don't: Charging contacts misaligned or corroded
  • Case LEDs don't respond: Power isn't reaching the case at all

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 2: Try a Different Charger First

The most common cause of "won't charge" is a bad cable or power adapter, not the AirPods:

  1. Test with a different USB-C cable: Borrow one from a phone or laptop. Bad cables are extremely common
  2. Use a different USB-C power adapter: Try a 20W or higher power adapter (iPhone 15 charger, iPad charger, or Mac charger all work)
  3. Try a different USB port: Switch from your computer's USB-C port to a wall adapter, or vice versa
  4. Wait 30 seconds: Sometimes AirPods 4 need a moment to wake up after long periods unplugged. Leave it plugged in for 1 minute and check the LED status
  5. Check the LED on the case:
    • Solid white: Fully charged
    • Amber/orange: Charging in progress
    • No light: Not receiving power or battery is dead

๐Ÿงน Step 3: Clean the USB-C Port

Lint, dust, and debris block electrical contact in the charging port โ€” this is the #1 cause of charging failure:

  1. Inspect the port: Look into the USB-C port on the back of the case with a flashlight. Look for lint, dust, or corrosion
  2. Use a dry cotton swab: Gently insert a dry cotton swab into the USB-C port and twist to dislodge debris. Do NOT use water or liquids
  3. Try a toothpick or plastic dental pick: For stubborn lint, use a non-metallic toothpick (wood or plastic) to gently scrape out particles. Be very gentle to avoid damaging the 24 pins inside
  4. Use compressed air (optional): A short burst of compressed air can help blow out loose particles, but cotton swabs are safer
  5. Never use metal: Metal tools can short-circuit the pins and permanently damage the charging port
  6. Try charging again: After cleaning, plug in with your original cable and adapter

๐Ÿ”Œ Step 4: Clean the Charging Contacts

Both the AirPods earbuds and the case have charging contacts. Corrosion on these contacts blocks charging:

  1. Remove the AirPods from the case and look inside the case where the earbuds rest
  2. Inspect the 3 charging pads on each earbud slot: They should be gold/shiny. If they're black, green, or dull, they're corroded
  3. Clean the case contacts: Use a dry cotton swab or soft cloth to gently wipe the three metal pads inside each slot
  4. Clean the earbud charging pins: Each AirPod has small gold pins on the underside that touch the case. Gently wipe with a cotton swab
  5. Dry completely: Make sure both contacts are completely dry before reinserting the AirPods
  6. Reseat the AirPods: Push them firmly into the case until they click
  7. Plug in and check the LED: Amber LED should appear within 5 seconds if charging is working

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If contacts are severely corroded (green/black), use a pencil eraser to gently rub the metal pads, then wipe with a clean cotton swab.

โš™๏ธ Step 5: Reset the AirPods Firmware

Sometimes a firmware glitch prevents charging detection even though the battery is fine:

  1. Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid
  2. Press and hold the Setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds
  3. Wait for the LED to flash amber 3 times, then white โ€” this indicates a reset
  4. Open the lid near your iPhone โ€” the pairing setup will begin
  5. Complete the pairing process by following the on-screen prompts
  6. Plug in the case: After pairing, plug the case into USB-C and verify the LED shows amber (charging) or white (charged)

๐Ÿ”ง Step 6: Advanced Troubleshooting

If none of the above steps worked:

  • Test with Mac or iPad: Some users report charging works on Mac but not iPhone. Try a different Apple device
  • Check for water damage: AirPods 4 are IPX4 water-resistant but not waterproof. If recently exposed to water, let them sit in a dry place for 48 hours
  • Update firmware manually: Connect the AirPods to your iPhone via Bluetooth, put the case on a charger near your iPhone, and leave it for 30 minutes. Firmware updates install automatically during this time
  • Try DFU mode on your iPhone: Occasionally, the pairing database gets corrupted. Reset your iPhone's Bluetooth: Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset โ†’ Reset โ†’ Reset Network Settings
  • Check warranty status: Go to apple.com/support and enter your AirPods serial number to see if they're still under the 1-year warranty

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ When to Replace the Battery

If charging fails after all the above steps, the issue is likely:

  • Dead battery in the case: The lithium polymer battery has reached end-of-life. This is not user-replaceable without micro-soldering equipment
  • Corroded charging port: The USB-C connector pins are permanently damaged and need professional replacement
  • Failed charging circuit: The power management IC on the case PCB is broken

In these cases, your options are:

  • ๐Ÿ“ž Contact Apple Support for a replacement (usually $99 for out-of-warranty cases)
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Use Apple Trade-In: Turn in old AirPods 4 and get credit toward new ones
  • ๐Ÿช Visit an Apple Store for repair pricing
