AirPods 3rd Generation Not Charging

🔍 Step 1: Isolate the Problem

• AirPods won't charge in case: Dirty charging contacts on AirPods or in case ports
• Case won't charge via Lightning: Lightning cable, adapter, or case port issue
• MagSafe won't charge the case: Alignment, dirty case bottom, or MagSafe pad issue
• One AirPod charges but not the other: Dirty contacts on that specific AirPod or its case slot
• Battery depletes very fast: Battery wear at 4+ years

🧹 Step 2: Clean the Charging Contacts

AirPods 3 have a different design from AirPods 2 — shorter stems, different contact pin placement. Cleaning is still the most common fix:

1. Remove AirPods from case
2. Locate the metal contact pins on the bottom of each AirPod
3. Clean with a dry cotton swab or dry lint-free cloth — remove any earwax, oils, or residue
4. Inside the case — clean the two charging contact points in each AirPod slot with a dry cotton swab
5. Never use liquids inside the case
6. Place AirPods back — amber LED should appear within seconds if contacts connect

🔌 Step 3: Case Port — Lightning or MagSafe

AirPods 3 case uses Lightning for wired charging. All AirPods 3 cases also support MagSafe and Qi wireless charging:

• For Lightning: try a different MFi-certified cable and adapter. Inspect port with flashlight for lint — clean with toothpick if needed
• For MagSafe: ensure the MagSafe puck snaps to the bottom center of the case. Clean the case bottom with a dry cloth
• For Qi wireless: try a different pad, ensure case is centered, remove silicone covers

🔄 Step 4: Reset AirPods

1. Place both AirPods in case, close lid, wait 30 seconds
2. Open lid
3. On iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) → Forget This Device
4. Press and hold the setup button on the case back for 15 seconds until LED flashes amber then white
5. Re-pair: hold case near iPhone with lid open

🔋 Step 5: Battery Status

AirPods 3 launched October 2021 — at 4+ years:

• Open case near iPhone → battery widget shows each AirPod and case charge
• If runtime has dropped significantly from original 6 hours, battery wear is the cause
• Apple charges $69/AirPod for out-of-warranty battery replacement
