AirPods 2nd Generation Not Charging

🔍 Step 1: Isolate the Problem

• AirPods don't charge in case (case charges fine): Dirty charging contacts on AirPods or in case ports
• Case won't charge via Lightning: Lightning cable, adapter, or case port issue
• One AirPod charges but not the other: That AirPod's contacts or corresponding case port has debris
• Battery depletes very fast: Battery wear at 6+ years — AirPods 2 were not designed for battery replacement
• Case LED doesn't light when plugged in: Cable or case port issue

🧹 Step 2: Clean the Charging Contacts

The most common fix for AirPods 2 at 6+ years old — earwax and debris on the contact pins:

1. Remove both AirPods from the case
2. Look at the metal contact pins at the base of each AirPod stem — these should be shiny metal
3. Clean with a dry cotton swab or dry lint-free cloth — remove any discoloration, earwax residue, or buildup
4. Check inside the case — the two charging contact points at the bottom of each slot should be clean metal. Clean gently with a dry cotton swab
5. Never use liquids inside the case
6. Place AirPods back in — the amber LED should appear within seconds if contacts connect properly

🔌 Step 3: Case Lightning Port Cleaning

AirPods 2 case uses Lightning — at 6+ years, the port can collect lint:

1. Inspect the Lightning port on the case bottom with a flashlight
2. Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently remove any lint
3. Try a different Lightning cable and a different adapter
4. Test with a different outlet

Note: AirPods 2 with the standard case (non-wireless) charge only via Lightning. The Wireless Charging Case version also supports Qi.

🌐 Step 4: Wireless Charging (Wireless Charging Case Only)

Only the AirPods 2 Wireless Charging Case variant supports Qi wireless charging:

• Try a different Qi pad — not all pads charge at equal efficiency
• Ensure the case is centered on the pad
• Remove silicone case covers — these can reduce Qi coupling
• Clean the bottom of the case with a dry cloth

🔄 Step 5: Reset AirPods

1. Place both AirPods in the case, close lid
2. Wait 30 seconds, open lid
3. Settings → Bluetooth → (i) next to AirPods → Forget This Device
4. Press and hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until LED flashes amber then white
5. Re-pair: hold case near iPhone with lid open

🔋 Step 6: Battery Status and Age

AirPods 2 launched March 2019 — at 6+ years, the batteries have likely degraded significantly:

• Open AirPods case near iPhone — check battery widget or ask Siri
• AirPod batteries are not user-replaceable — Apple charges $69/AirPod for replacement out of warranty
• If AirPods last under 2 hours and were originally 5 hours, replacement or upgrade is warranted
• AirPods 2 are still available as new — or consider upgrading to AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 2 for active noise cancellation
