What AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Features Do

Hearing Test (FDA-cleared, 5 minutes)

Built-in audiogram. Plays tones at varying pitches and volumes; you tap when you hear them. Generates a personalized hearing profile saved to Health app. Comparable to a basic clinical audiogram for screening.

Hearing Aid (FDA-cleared)

Uses your audiogram to amplify specific frequencies you struggle with. Clinical-grade processing. Apple is the FIRST major tech company to receive FDA clearance for software-based hearing aids in over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids.

Conversation Boost

Beam-forming microphones focus on the person directly in front of you. Background noise reduced. Game-changer for restaurants and group conversations. Available with Live Listen on AirPods Pro 1 and 2.

Loud Sound Reduction

Real-time protection from sudden loud noises (concerts, sirens, machinery). Different from Active Noise Cancellation — this protects your hearing rather than blocking ambient sound.

Media Assist

iPhone-paired audio (music, calls, video) is automatically adjusted to your hearing profile. Compensates for the same frequencies your hearing struggles with in real life.

Important Limitations

1. Battery life: ~6 hours per charge. Traditional aids run all day. Plan to charge AirPods at lunch + use during specific situations (meetings, restaurants, family dinners) rather than all-day wear.
2. Severe hearing loss: not appropriate. AirPods Pro 2 are FDA-cleared for mild to moderate loss only. If you can't follow a 1-on-1 conversation in a quiet room, you need prescription aids.
3. Tinnitus: not addressed. AirPods don't have tinnitus masking features. Some users find the audio playback helps incidentally, but it's not a primary feature.
4. Wax + comfort. All-day silicone tip wear can irritate. Rotate sizes (S/M/L tips), clean weekly.
5. iPhone dependence. Hearing aid features require iPhone connection (Bluetooth). If iPhone dies, AirPods retain settings but can't update profile.
6. Audiogram screening, not diagnosis. The built-in test is a screen. If you suspect significant loss, see an audiologist for a full diagnostic test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription? No. Apple's hearing aid feature is OTC — you set it up entirely on your iPhone using the built-in hearing test.
How accurate is the iPhone hearing test?Comparable to basic screening audiogram. Clinical full audiograms have more frequencies tested and bone conduction. For screening + setup, AirPods test is sufficient.
Can I use my existing audiologist's audiogram?Yes. Health app → Audiogram → Add → import your clinical audiogram PDF. AirPods Pro 2 will use that profile.
Do AirPods replace my hearing aids permanently? For some with mild loss, yes. For moderate-severe loss, AirPods are best as a supplementary tool — wear traditional aids for daily life, AirPods for specific situations (theater, gym, conversations).
How is the battery life?~6 hours of hearing aid use per charge. Case extends to 30+ hours with recharges. Plan around charging windows.
Can I shower with AirPods Pro 2?No. They're sweat- and water-resistant (IP54), not waterproof. Remove for swimming and showers.
Do they work without an iPhone?Once set up, they retain settings and work standalone for amplification. Some features require iPhone connection.
What about my Apple Watch?Apple Watch can control AirPods volume + ANC level via the Now Playing widget. Useful when iPhone is in pocket.
Is this covered by Medicare?Original Medicare doesn't cover hearing aids. Some Medicare Advantage plans do. Submit AirPods Pro 2 receipt + FDA documentation. Many people get partial reimbursement now that they're FDA-cleared.
Should I tell my audiologist?Yes — they can interpret your audiogram and confirm if AirPods are appropriate for your loss profile. Some audiologists are now suggesting AirPods alongside traditional aids for situational use.
